PLEASE! How do I setup DNS host and domain info in Windows XP?? (Now w/pics!)

I'm having trouble setting up a friend's computer for TCP/IP in Windows XP. Previously, under Win98 TCP/IP setup they had a hostname and domain setup on the DNS Configuration tab of TCP/IP properties. The hostname was in the format "sub1.sub2.hostname.net" and the domain was in the format "domainname.com".

Under TCP/IP setup in Windows XP, under DNS I am only able to enter IP addresses (format of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) and not true hostnames.

Does anyone know where I can enter in the host and domain information for DNS under Windows XP's TCP/IP setup screen?

Most of the TCP/IP settings are in:

Control Panel, Network, Right Click on Local Area Connection, Click on Properties, Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Click on Properties.

You have some of the setting in the general Tab; the rest is on the Advance button, or the Alternate Config Tab.

JackMDS, this doesn't really help. Notice how the options in TCP/IP Config, Advanced, Alternate Config only allow you to enter addresses based on IP (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) whereas I'm trying to enter hostname and domain NAMES, NOT IP addresses!

Right click My Computer choose properties -> Computer Name -> Change

In XP your computer name is you DNS name, like if you ping your machine name it will resolve it to the IP. You can also enter DOMAIN and WORKGROUP information in the same place. I hope this is what your asking about.

Think about this.
Why would you enter the DNS servers FQDN here? And how would you resolve it !

Perhaps you are speaking of the box where you enter a list of suffixes to append?

ARRRGHH I can't take it anymore!!! I just can't figure this out...its so easy to do in Windows 98 yet I can't do it in Windows XP!!! No one's been able to answer this question...

Okay, here is a screenshot from Windows 98. Notice the TWO (2) circled boxes, "Domain" and "Host". This is from the Windows 98 TCP/IP properties dialog box, on the DNS tab. Linky For Screenshot. Now, where do I enter these same values in Windows XP??? There's gotta be a way...

Didnt CaseyAZ answer correctly? In Windows XP, to change a hostname, right click on My Computer, click properties, click Computer Name, and click Change. You can also enter either a workgroup or a domain name.

In XP the Computername == the hostname, you can't have seperate ones. The fact that you can in other versions of Windows is a stupid MS networking 'feature' and I'm glad it's gone.

Jigga, they are right..
The computer name is the hostname..
and there is no way to enter a hostname in the dns configuration like you want to, the best solution is to ping the hostname to find the ip address as others have said.
