For I have accquired some scsi equipment, 2 scsi cards a scsi scanner, and the use of a scsi cd burner, and would like to begin learning about scsi stuff, so if any scsi gods whom might be availble to answer my questions thru the night, might want to pm me... or check back here... and make an IDE zealot one of their own.

Oh btw the cards I have are : adaptec 2906 biosless
and the 2944 uw ... i have the cables to connect the cd burner to the 2944, and the scanner to the 2906, can i slip the 2 of them into one machine, and go to town with win 98se ? or what?

Why would you need the 2944? You don't have any hard drives, which is what you'd want the UW and BIOS for. Unless you really, really want to be able to boot off the burner...

lmao, boot off the burner.. hmmm well I'm going to use these cards to learn scsi, and I'll scrimp and save my penny's till maybe I can afford a hard drive... Gotta start someplace right?

that 2944 is a $300 dollar card, I got to put it to some use....

Maybe you should put it to use getting $300 and buying a different controller and a HD?

ArkAoss,

If you want to start with SCSI, you have to do it right by doing some homework. The Adaptec 2944UW card is designed for High Voltage Differential (HVD) SCSI devices. The card and compatible devices are meant for server or workstations, which means very expensive because of the reliability built-in. Getting the Adaptec 2944UW card for $30 is no bargain because you have to spend a fortune to get any HVD device. Since they are built for reliability, you will get less performance for a lot more money compared to SCSI devices designed for home use.

Tell us the model number of your CD burner and scanner. We will provide some advice for you. There is a good chance that you will not need the 2944.

2944UW is the old standard, using HVD, all the new model utilize Low Voltage Differential (LVD), which is Single End mode compatible. HVD drives can only operate with HVD controller, but LVD drives can operate with SE (your plain Ultra Wide controller), but it's limited to SE mode's 40MB/s speed instead of the higher 80 or 160MB/s I'm not too sure if you can still get new HVD drives now...
