Hi, I hope I am not 'interrupting' this forum, but I figured, since this particular group is supposed to be non-biased I would give it a shot...any help will be immensely appreciated.

I would like to construct my own PC. I have read up in books and on the internet, but I always manage to get back to square one in terms of whether I think its worth it to do it on my own, and, what to use.

I have a PIII, 500MHz system from Gateway that I have upgraded, on my own, with an ethernet card, firewire, and CDRW drive, so, although I know it will be consideerably more complicated to construct my own PC from scratch, I think I can do it. The system I have now has a 4x DVD (40x CD???), Yamaha 8/8/24 CDRW, 200W power supply, I assume an ATX case (?), a 20GB HD IBM Deskstar 7200 (60GXP???), Voodoo3 16MB 3000, SoundBlaster Live Value.

I use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Toon Boom, Bryce, etc. As you can see, I use primarily graphics programs, primarily in 2D, but also do some DV editing as well. On occassion, I play a game. I would like a 1.4 AMD or 1.8 P4 system, and after much research, I think I may end up with a Pentium 4. I would like to keep costs under $1,500.00. I am impressed with the Asus P4T mobo reviews, and the Deskstar 7200 60GXP 40-60GB HDs. Also, Samsung or Kingston seem to get fair prices for their RDRAM. Any thoughts on a videocard? How about a Hercules Prophet 64MB? Do you know if I will require a 300 or 400+ watt power supply? I do not have any desire to overclock. I do want to use my old hard drive, and purchase another for video use.

I hope I am making sense. Again, any of your thoughts regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ! Marc
