ok.. my friend (same one with 80mm problem) put together his computer, and this is his message:

--

Oh my god...I was putting my system together...got CPU, HSF, RAM, and Video card in...turned it on to see if it would POST. I was sure I did everything right..."by the book". As we're about to see...something went way wrong :-(

Before I start...the relevent parts of my system:
mobo: Epox 8K7A
CPU: AMD 1.2ghz 266 Thunderbird
RAM: Crucial 256MB PC2100 DDR
Video: Leadtek GeForce2 Pro 32mb
HSF: GlobalWin WBK38 w/80mm fan- the base was lapped some with 600 grit wet sandpaper, on a marble surface.

CPU and HSF were both cleaned with alcohol and a lint-free cloth before installation.

the ASII was applied, and the HSF was attached a minute or two later...

Also- this is my dad and my first time building a computer...

Well, I turned the power on (for the POST). It came on- fans were on, the RAM started counting upwards. However, it looked like the RAM got stuck at about 233mb...(i have 256 PC2100 DDR total) for about a second...then the power went OFF. About a minute later, my dad and I noticed a odd smell (a burn-ish smell...it's hard to describe) coming from the mobo area...we jus kinda smelled around, and it seemed like that smell was coming from the CPU area.

The whole incident lasted for about 5-10 seconds, from power on to power off. After the power shut off, we attempted to power on again...NOTHING happened. No lights, no fan, no nothing.

So, we removed the CPU/HSF, but left the fans plugged in. We turned the power on, and the fans and the LEDs on the mobo came on. No problems...I suppose that means that my PS/mobo are still living.

Btw, after removing the CPU, it definitely seemed like that was where the smell came from. I wiped the ASII off with some alcohol and a lint-free cloth. The die was fine- no black marks, no cracks, nothing. However, the back of the CPU had two dark (not black, but a darkish purple) that looked like grease marks. One in the center (where this sticker is...i cant remove the sticker- it'll void my warranty), and another one diagonal from it.

Anyway, after that, we plugged the CPU/HSF back in, see if the fans and such would come on. Well...they "did". That is, the LEDs flashed on, then off...and the fans moved, but power was gone like a half-second after we turned it on.

I also tried lowering the multiplier to 5, but still nothing.

It works w/o cpu...dies w/cpu...my gut tells me I just annihilated a Thunderbird...FSCK.

What should be my next course of action? Should I take my stuff to a computer shop that will test things? Or should I go ahead and attempt to RMA the CPU...?

Also: this is how I attached the HSF, if it helps...

I attached the long end of the clip to the raised side of the socket (middle lug). I then laid the HSF flat onto the CPU.

NOTE: I used a annodized aluminum shim; it is NOT condutctive.

Anyway, after laying it down like this, I used a screw driver to attach the other part of the clip onto the lug on the other side of the socket...

I dont know what I did wrong...read AMD's installation guide over and over...did "as it said" (well, obviously messed up...) ARG
