ok i have no idea whats going on now. so please bear with me. i have a home lan. and i am running an ftp server. i got it all set up forwarded port 21 and it was working fine. i just reinstalled my sound card today and when i restarted my computer and tried to conect my ftp server online it gave me this messag "2/23/01 9:13:34 PM SERVER: Unable to start server, port 21 may already be in use." i uninstalled the sound card and restarted and it still keep s doing this. i tried reinstalling my nic card and the protocols and i am still getting that message. i rechecked my router and all the setting s are the same. i even reset it and then forwarded port 21 and nothing. i had my ftp server up and working and i just dont understand this i ve checked my device manager. i even tried to switch the port that my ftp server was listening on and i got the same message with that port as well? i went to www.grc.com and had my ports scanned and port 21 was showing up as closed.ive done a virus scan. im lost here now. so i guess my questions are what can be using port 21 and what program can i use to find this out? also any clues or advice or help would be greatly apreciated. thanks

Did you make sure that the IP address of the computer that port 21 is forwarded to did not change? Does it still match the one listed in the router table?

Did you VERIFY that this is the IP address of the system? The port on your hub doesn't lease an IP address, the computer does. If you are using the DHCP feature of the router, this can change when you reboot.

yes i am using the same ip address that i had before. checked it with MyWanip. is theere something i have to do with dynamic routing or static routing? also i just specified the wan ip address in my router along with default gateway and dns....still nothing. something is still using port21

call your isp and make sure that they did not close this port from their end.

Hope this helps...

i dont think that is the problem. i tried using other ports too and i got the same message that the port was being used by something else

Rwest75,

That message doesn't necessarily mean that the port is actually being used by something else. It can also simply mean the port is not open.

Have you scanned the system for viruses and/or trojans? In particular for ones such as network.vbs? Look in the root directory and see if there is a file called network.log. Also, check the startup folder on the system.

yeah i ve scannned my system for viruses. i dont have the port problem now. the problem i m having now is that my ftp server is not accessable even though it says it s online. ive tried to conect to it from outside and inside my lan but it s not working. ive reset the router, specified ip (wanip) and subnet, default gateway, and dns. i forwarded the ports 20 and 21 ive tried with dhcp enabled and disabled. i have nt tried with static or dynamic ip routing yet but im not exactly sure how to set those up. i want to put it back to the way i had it befor. i had the same ip address and the only thing i think i did was forward the ports for my ftp to the ip address that is assigned to my computer from the router to the hub. (i have my ports forwarded to 192.168.1.3 wich is the port on my hub that i am conected to) when i connect my ftp server iam getting this message now

"2/24/01 4:19:48 PM - FTP Server On-line : IP(s) 192.168.1.100, on port 21"

also i am using G6 ftp server.

when you try to connect to it are you using your lan ip or your wan ip.

Try using your wan ip. the router will then forward the request to the appropriate computer and port.

set the router back to obtain ip address automatically, enabled dhcp on the router and still no luck with the ftp server. does anybody have anymore ideas?
