Please Help

PCI video cards will NOT run today's games, with the possible exception of WoW. I've seen up to a 6600GTS in PCI form, but the PCI interface is so slow you won't see its full performance.
 
Ok, So I found a PCI-Express slot on this computer ,where a modem was plugged in. Does it matter if my motherboard supports certain cards or since its a PCI-Express will it support any type of PCI express card?
 
Depends on the type of PCI-E slot it is. If its the big full PCI-E slot (16x) then you can run modern cards. if its smaller like a 1x or 4x, u cant use the new cards. Is this a store bought, Dell, or self built?
 
It might be an AMR or CNR slot, not a PCI-Express slot. Avron, consult the manufacturer's spec sheet for your computer (if it's a store-bought pre-built computer) or for your motherboard if it's a "built" computer.
 
That X1300 PCI card is nuts. If you told me before today that there was a PCI card that could rub Oblivion, I'd have said you're nuts. I stand corrected.

PCI-E 1x card pickins are slim. I'd stick with the X1300 and stick it in a PCI slot.

edit: Ugh, ISA slot? How old IS this computer anyway, Avron? Does it have a turbo button on the front?
 
Hate to say it but if this kid is asking what a PCI slot is, I doubt he will know what card to pick out and how to install/configure it.

I don't think he should even be opening a computer case.

I thought I posted this but I didn't. In this type of situation it is best to have someone know what they are doing perform what he wants while he watches. I doubt he knows about ESD, powering off the unit and waiting 30 seconds, driver configuration/support, ect. Computers aren't something you just dive into expecting only positive results as with other hobbies. I say this comming from experience.

I learned what a PCI slot looks like by myself and my method did not involve asking people on a computer forum things like "What is the slot my modem connects to?"

This is not the right place to learn the very basics. Leave that to www.wikipedia.org and www.howstuffworks.com
 
A few months ago the old me would have been agreeing with StopSign, but the new(and hopefully improved) me wants to give folks a chance. 🙂

Avron, if this a name brand PC, then a model number would be of considerable help, and even if it's not a name brand computer, then the model number on the motherboard would also be of great assistance in determining what the capabilities of the board are in supporting video card upgrades.
 
I think we scared him away.

Come back, Avron, there's no shame in having a Turbo button. I can't play The Incredible Machine on a computer that doesn't have one.
