i dont think i encrypted my NTFS drive . . . . . . . .

Then lending a computer, a fresh install on another partition or harddrive is the way to go AFAIK. Another harddrive with current unplugged is the safest way to ensure nothing goes wrong, but you can also install on another partition if you have one.

no, i only made one partition when i formatted the drive . . .

i guess i'll order a drive from Outpost.com in the morning, there are a few good rebates happening ($70 for 200GB) . . . use that, install XP, transfer all the files

then reformat this 250GB drive i have right now and make partitions . . . what do you think i should make the partitions as, just as to avoid this in the future . . .

i think i'll then sell the drive i buy tomorrow on FS/FT or something

Personally I have a 20Gb partition for OS and programs. Games, music, movies etc are stored on other partitions/harddrives. And I regularly do backups of my important work :p (only a few Mb's though)

where/when would i choose repair installation? i don't see it anywhere yet . . .

Like I said, I'm pretty sure you go about it as if you're going to do just a normal Windows install onto the drive...at which point it'll scan and find an already existing Windows install, and it'll ask you if you want to repair it. (Hint: you do ;))

ahh okay, i did that and now it says :

Setup cannot create the folder:

\WINDOWS\mui

Setup cannot continue until the folder is created.

possible trojan? ---- if you cant write to partition? unless of course if its encrypted NTFS as someone said earlier.....

probably 4-5Gb but it also needs space for virtual memory, system restore etc., and it's pretty tiresome to run out of space on your C:, so atleast 10Gb. if you only install OS on that drive.

hmm, since i have 250GB, might as well just give 15GB or so for the OS
