OK....I have now been searching the internet high and low for a solution..a simple answer to the one great question!!! Will a Plextor 716SA DVD burner work with a Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard. I have it hooked up, the computer reconignes the drive but when I insert any type of medi into the drive it will spin up then spin down then LOCK my computer up HARD!!!!!!

PLEASE HELP!!!

Mike, a lot of other folks are having probs with the Nforce4 chip and sata Plextor. Have you checked for firmware update for the Plex? Maybe the new bios supposed to be out soon from Asus will help.

True everyone is having problems, although I though the majority of those problems were that the drive can't be seen. THat is not the problem I have.

Did you install the NV Software IDE controllers?

It's purely a BIOS issue if the latest firmware doesn't help. I know on my nForce3 Asus board that only one BIOS, the original shipping one, would work properly with my 712SA. Later BIOSes would recognize the drive but would simply reboot the system during bootup for no reason. Try different BIOSes for your mobo. btw when I complained to Asus about the problem they just ignored me so know that Asus support BLOWS.

I don't recall. but this is an SATA drive not an IDE drive. I'm not even using the IDE cables right now.

It does make a difference. Funny that you need to install the nv software ide controllers from the NF4 Stand Alone driver pack from nVidia to have a functioning NCQ on sata interface drives. Why would ide drivers have any influence on NCQ for sata drives?

I have 2 PX716-SA drives on the same chipset. #1 you must install the drive on the
Nvidia SATA ports, Disable Raid if you dont have a raid array, install the latest
Nforce Driver 6.39 and install the Nvidia IDE & SATA drivers.

If you put it on the nVidia ports you will have to ensure RAID is disabled, I recommend just sticking it on the SI controller as others have said. That is where I have mine and it is running just fine.

Wrong!!!!!!!!!! Putting it on SIL wil cause you perfomance loss due to the data has to travel the PCI bus.
On the Nvidia ports it operate straight off the chip no PCI bus involved.
Hence better, faster data transfer.

I had a similar problem with my 712SA. I installed the latest BIOS and nForce chipset drivers and the problem went away. Now one of my ehternet ports no longer works, but that's another thread...

Have you tried updateing the BIOS and nForce drivers? I'm currently running BIOS 1006 and nForce drivers 6.53.
