PLEASE Help with Windows XP Network Drive Sharing

Ok back in win 9x you could have a password for sharing a drive for example if computer B on a network has its X drive shared you can make it where person on computer C has to type a password to access that drive. Now it seems in XP you can share the drive but i do not see anything about passwords, so now if a friend comes over and plugs into my network he can have access to all my files not needing a password. What happened? what am i missing!

WinXP DOES ask for a username and password for it's shares. The only time it doesn't is when you have guest access enabled.

GO into your user profiles and disable guest access.

At that point, anyonen trying to access your XP shares will need a valid login on your box

Has a friend actually come over and TRIED this yet? If so, what OS was he using? Or are you just assuming that since there's no obvious password button, that they will ahave access?

Passwords are automatically needed if guest access is disabled....as long as you've got that covered you'll be set.

two of my other computers on the network one running xp and one running me have full access to that machine. under the sharing tab on the harddrive i have it enabled to share but there is no place to put a pasword like there was in 9X

I'm familiar with XP, and just trying to help you out man

Try this:

Sharing of files and folders can be managed in two ways. If you chose simplified file sharing, your folders can be shared with everyone on your network or workgroup, or you can make your folders private. (This is how folders are shared in Windows 2000.) However, in Windows XP Professional, you can also set folder permissions for specific users or groups. To do this, you must first change the default setting, which is simple file sharing. To change this setting, follow these steps:

Open Control Panel, click Tools, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab, and scroll to the bottom of the Advanced Settings list.
Clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.
To manage folder permissions, browse to the folder in Windows Explorer, right?click the folder, and then click Properties. Click the Security tab, and assign permissions, such as Full Control, Modify, Read, and/or Write, to specific users.

You can set file and folder permissions only on drives formatted to use NTFS, and you must be the owner or have been granted permission to do so by the owner.

sorry i was not trying to be a D*** when i asked if you knew XP or were just guessing, I do thank you for all your help and i relize that you are just being nice and do not have to even read my stuff. with that said i think that you figured it out with the simple settings, i wil let you know as soon as i try it. but that looks like what i needed. so in win2k you caould not have anytype of pasword or secure sharing? that would be kinda ghetto. Anyway thanks again and i will let you know how that works but right now i ned to run to the store real quick!

<< . so in win2k you caould not have anytype of pasword or secure sharing? >>

Actually, in win2k it DEFAULTS to always needing a password...whereas in XP it apparently defaults to NOT needing a password for shares.

Pretty much similar features, but 2k and XP each have "quirks" to setting things up so that they're identical
