Ok... I have windows xp pro. i try to get on the internet but a windows update pops up and tells me i need like 40 different updates....so i update the service pack 1 first.. its finished, tells me to restart, i do so and now all it does is turn on for a few seconds them reboots over and over again. I contact microsoft on phone and they tell me i need my cd key...i cant find that sucker anywheres, my computer wont turn on so i cant find my product number or anything for windows xp pro i purchased for around 200 bucks. Now they want me to PAY technical support to CALL ME AND TELL ME HOW TO FIX IT SO I CAN FIX IT MYSELF WHILE PAYING THEM. I even asked the lady "so your saying i need to pay microsoft for telling me how to fix my computer cause of a problem they caused?" and she simply said yes.... Please HELP anything!!!!

Microsoft offers free support for problems that occur when using Windows Update, but you're not going to get very far if you can't provide a product key.

If you can produce a valid product key after getting your system going you could ask for a refund.

Roll back the service pack. To do this, boot into recovery console (boot from the XP CD, hit F10 once it finishes booting, then log in), and then CD to c:\windows\$ntservicepackuninstall$\spuninst directory and then run the spuninst.bat file to uninstall the service pack. You'll then be back to where you started (with respect to the files on the system - once you boot the box, go to add/remove control panel to do the same.)

I hope you chose the option to archive files when you did the upgrade. ;)

Do a Dir on the directory and tell me what's in there. There should be a batch file in there, or you'd type "batch spuninst.txt". Anyway, tell me what files are in there.

Do you see any error when it reboots? Were you behind a firewall when you first connected to the Internet?

If not, the service pack is not the problem, but you probably got hit by a worm.

LMAO,........... sorry

Back to your problem, assuming you have a perfectly legit, legal copy of windows(don't be offended), I suspect you got hit by a worm too. Usually that happens when a system reboots over and over. Try running an antivirus scan. Does it give you any error message before the system reboots though?

Edit: Whoops you already answered that. Can you even boot in safemode? If not, then I guess you might have to run a reinstallation/repair install, unless anyone else has some other suggestions =/

Or it means he's got the checkmark for reboot after a bluescreen selected; there's no way to tell. And typically the common worm gives a 30 second countdown timer.

You could try to do a repair.
Repair XP Installation without Clean Install:

Configure your computer BIOS to start from the CD-ROM drive at bootup.

Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.

(You can also boot with a Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run WINNT.EXE in the I386 folder on the CD)

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

This will repair XP and put everything back to as it first was. You will have to reinstall any Hotfixes and OS updates including SP1 and DX9, plus retweak most (but not all) things all over again.

The advanage here is that you will not have to spend hours reinstallindg all your programs again, as well as setting them up...................
