"While initiating device IOS:error:real mode system memory allocation failed."

My friend got this error while trying to boot up into Win98, it then takes him to the bootup menu with safe-mode and normal and other various types of bootup. He tried booting up into safe mode, then shutting down and he still gets the same errors. Any ideas?

After checking around on the web, the only proposed solution I was able to find for this specific problem was to remove smartdrive. I guess it's worth a shot.
