As most of us already this, but most or all routers have firewall built-in. It really affects my gaming life. I can't send stuffs to my friends using various programs which use various ports like port 21 for ftp and stuff like that. I guess my question is how do I turn off all these protections suck as NAT, firewall, or anything related to it so that it works just like the way it supposes to without a router. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

I have the same router with the same issues. No one can connect to my ftp and I can't run a game server over the net. I did manage to set up icq to accept files. You have to go into SUA/NAT and forward the ports, which I've done.

I hope you have better luck getting help here than I've had. I've done a bunch of these threads with little to no help :( Heres one I posted yesterday.

Sd Sorry to hear you are disappointed at the level of help you found here but you need to keep in mind that this router gig is still pretty new and many of us are just learning how to use them. That said i think had you looked harder rather than starting a thread and waiting for help you may have found your answers quicker. I don't even use a router but a friend of mine got the netgear 314 recently and was having the same problems so i just started doing searches. over the course of a couple of weeks i was able to get the answers either here on the bbs or links to resources that helped us figure it all out but I had to look for it.

If you want to make your computer appear as if it is plugged into your WAN connection, (ie "DMZ") you need to do the following:

First, run winipcfg (ipconfig for NT) and determine your IP address. You should use a static IP since the DHCP server in the 314 could assign a different IP address to your computer causing the packets to get forwarded to the wrong computer!

Under the SUA menu 15, next to the FIRST selection where it says DEFAULT, put the (private) IP address of the computer you want exposed to the net. This could be 192.168.0.x or whatever. Since you're doing this where it says DEFAULT, this means ANY packet on ANY port will be forwarded to that IP. This is essentially DMZ. It is thus HIGHLY RECOMMENDED you run a software firewall such as Zone Alarm, Conceal, Black Ice, @Guard/NS2000, etc.

Treat it just as if your computer was connected to the broadband modem! All network games will work as servers, etc.

Cheers!

sharkeeper, I understand completely what you said because that is exactly what i did. But how do I do it for another comp? That default thingy is only for one comp. Anyone? :) Thanks. Oh I also opened up various ports for files transfering and it works fine I guess but the main question is how can one make it so that the router treats it just like you connect directly to WAN? :)

That's unfortunately the limitation of DMZ. You can only have one computer fully exposed behind the router at a given time. I could be wrong, but this is what I found out while trying it.

All the other selections won't allow use of all ports like default does. I tried 0 and that didn't work either.

Cheers!

Yeah, that is what I thought too. Damn the stupid limitation. I guess I have to manually enter different ports and open them up for other comps. Anyone else have different opinion? :)

Bump up for good cause. I know a lot of people have questions reguarding this problem and hope this information can help them. :)

I tried all that and no one can connect to my ftp still. I noticed it won't let ya enter the same port but with a different ip.

Firmware update will solve all your problems.
Everything works at default settings if you
are willing to flash latest firmware .

But you will need console connection .
So first thing go out and get serial cable. Its $10 or so.
Post when you are ready.

EDIT: When you establish console connection
check router bootbase version. You need it to decide which
firmware to flash.
In console go to 'system maintenance', then 'command interpreter'
and type 'sys version'
Post your current firmware and bootbase versions.

Alright Vrangel :)
Here is what it gave me:
RAS version: V3.20(CA.0) | 6/28/2000
blah blah
blah blah
bootbase version: V1.05 | 4/14/2000

BTW, you can connect to the console using telnet. You don't have to waste 10 bux on the serial cable I think. Thanks Vrangel.

Ok, I also just downloaded Version 3.22 from Netgear and the Half-Life patch for Counter-Strike too. :) I don't know what to do with it yet. Hehe...

Yeah, you can save $10 on serial cable, just keep in mind that
console is the only connection that can be used to recover from bad flash.

Bootbase 1.05 allows to flash Zyxel firmware on Netgear.
Benefit of it is that you get latest firmware for your router
with all features enabled (Netgear version is somewhat castrated).
Zyxel 3.23 is the latest and HL works perfectly without any patches .

But it doesnt have web based interface so serial connection is needed.

Anywayz lets flash 3.22 then . Its pretty good actually.

1. Go to CuteFTP website ,download and install CuteFTP.

2. Launch CuteFTP and log into your router.
You need login address which you can find by running winipcfg (default gateway).
Also username ( 'admin' by default) and password ('1234' default)
Top CuteFTP window will tell you when login is successful.
You will see contents of your HD in the left window and contents of router in the right window.
Router contains two files: bigger one is firmware and small one is config file.

3.Click on 'tools'(hammer icon) then 'advanced' and choose 'binary mode'.

4.Find new (3.22) config file on your HD in the left window and rename it.
New name has to match exactly the name of existing config file in the right window.
Renaming needs to be done within CuteFTP. Just rightclick on the file in the left window and rename.

5.Drag newly renamed config file from left window to the right window.
You will be asked if you want to replace file. Choose yes and it will flash right away.
Top window will show a flash successful message.

6.Repeat 4 and 5 for firmware file.
Its bigger so it will take some 10-20 sec to flash. Router lights will blink
while flashing and again you will get a message in the top window when its over.

Thats it for now. :)

Try 3.23 from Zyxel website. It says its for P310 router, nevermind that.
Latest Zyxel firmware is integrated for entire line of Zyxel and Netgear routers.
(Kind of like Nvidia drivers). You need version 3.23(M.00).

However Netgear 314 with 2.0x bootbase wont flash any Zyxel firmware.
So check your bootbase version first.

For me 3.23 solved all problems I had.
And I didnt even have to configure any settings.
Works at default like a charm.

You might have to do just that if you want to solve your problems.
Feedback from flashing 3.22 with HL patch is positive.
(Some ppl try even beta firmware hidden on Zyxel website.
It fixes specific problem with some 3COM modem on PPPoE.)

Personally I went from 3.20 straight to 3.23 .
Had problems with Q3A and HL game server, Gamespy and Napster with 3.20
After flashing 3.23 all problems gone.

The argument about official Netgear fimware is laughable.
Dont you know that Netgear doesnt make any routers ?
Its all made by Zyxel and OEMed to Netgear.
Zyxel P314 and Netgear RT314 are hardware identical.
And of course Zyxel makes all firmware as well.

Its like refusing to use Nvidia reference drivers for CL videocard.

hmmm...Didn't know that. What exactly does this 3.23 have over the 3.22? Do you have a link?

*update* I went and checked out the Zyxel site, but all I see is a 3.20 firmware.

Here is a link. Its supposedly for P310
but as I said earlier they integrated firmware across product line (like Nvidia drivers).

List of changes and revisions is in pdf format within zip file.

Do not flash if your RT314 has 2.0x bootbase version.

EDIT
I havent tried 3.22 so I cannot compare. BTW 3.22 needs HL patch
while 3.23 doesnt. So its more advanced version.
Some ppl say the best results are with 3.23 firmware and 3.22 config combo.
So you might wanna try that too.

thanks a lot Vrangel. Hey, i just downloaded 3.23. Can I just use cuteftp and rename it and flash it just like the 3.22? i think it'll work that way. :) Did you try it yet?
