Please help with PSU and case.

Starting my first build. Initially I decided on the AMD 64 2800+ processor, which led me to chosing a socket 754 MOBO. I knew I wanted a nVIDIA 250Gb chipset after reading many reviews. Initially thought of getting the Epox at about $75, but after reading most of the posts in the Soltek thread, went with the Soltek. Almost everyone seems satisified with this board. Being a newbie, I have 2 additional questions.

My question is regarding case and PSU. The MOBO will require an ATX case. For me, I do not need an expensive case. It is just going to sit under the desk. Will not be moving the case either. I think I can get an decent case for around $30 - $40. The main question I have is more in regards to the PSU. I read somewhere that as a minimum, you need a 400W PSU for a 64 bit chip. I assume anything over 400W would be reasonable? And would most any 400W power supply that comes standard with a low end case be resonable for my usage? Or do I need to buy a low end case and supplement with a seperate PSU? Looking to do this as cheaply as possible as I'm on a budget for the overall computer. Are there other parameters of the PSU that I need to evaluate? Or certain brands to look out for or avoid? To me getting an adequate PSU seems more important than the case itself.

In all likelyhood I will be running the following components eventually:
1) Soltek board with Athlon 64 2800+
2) 1 Gig of Ram
3) New 60 - 80 gig hard drive possibly with an additional much older 20 gig HD as a slave
4) New DVD Burner
5) Seperate DVD Rom
6) Video card, not yet decided on which one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Chad

Forget wattage. Just get a good PSU. A Fortron 300w will eat a Raidmax 500w for lunch.
Antec (Channel Well), Silverstone (Enhance, heavy, solid things), Enlight (High Power, semi-noisy), Thermaltake (High Power), Fortron FSP-xxx (conservatively rated), Sparkle FSP-xxx (Fortron), Enermax (high quality output, rated accurately, price premium), etc.

I aggree with cerb> Some 150 watt ones can eat a 300 watt, It depends on the features amperage and rails>But even with that you realy need people to try them out or read reviews since all powersupplys perform differently even with the same rating.Sorta like cars i guess

Thanks for the help. Have done some research. To me, it seems better to get a quality PSU seperate from a case.

Has anyone had experience with a Logisys 450W PowerLab PSU?

Here is a link to the item at computerhq.com:
http://www.computerhq.com/Logi...artinfo-id-513680.html

It is 450W. I know this in and of itself means nothing. From what I've read, the most important thing is that amps on the 12V+ rail. Looked at an Antec 300W for more money than this one which had 15A on the 12V rail. The Logisys appears to be decent with 25A on the 12V rail.

Any opinions? Have found a different site that actually has it priced less, $21 including shipping. Thanks for your thoughts. Chad

Just found a Powmax 400W PSU with 25A on the 12V rail. And from what I can read, Powmax is horrible. Not sure about the Logisys now as I can find little info on it.

Have done some research. I'm definately going with an Antec case.

My two choices are between:

SLK2600AMB:
http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=11-129-117&depa=0

SLK1650B:
http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=11-129-150&depa=1

Price difference is negligible. The 2600 has a door which I prefer. But the 1650 has 350W PSU and 120mm fan compared to the 300W and 80mm fan on the 2600.

I will be running:
AMD Athlon 64 2800+
1 Gig of 3200 Ram
SOLTEK "SL-K8AN2E-GR" NVIDIA nForce3 250Gb Chipset Motherboard
MSI NVIDIA GeForce4 MX4000 Video Card 128MB, AGP 8x, 2D/3D w/ TV-Out
DVD Writer Dual Layer - Do not know which one yet
Seperate DVD Rom
No sound card
Possible card reader and video capture card.

Is the Antec 2600 with a 300W PSU reasonable for what I will be running? Do not do any gaming. Thanks for the help. Chad

Take a look at the SLK3700AMB / the SLK3700BQE, they are very nice cases have a door and front and back 120mm fans.
