I just got my Ultra100 for my IBM 75GXP, and I can't get it going. I'm pretty sure its(card and cable) installed correctly, but upon boot-up I get "Boot Failure. Insert Diskette and hit any key." I changed PCI slots and that did nothing.

Appreciate any help.

I think I figured it out. I went into the system BIOS and changed the boot from IDE-0 to SCSI. I was able to boot to win98, it recognized my "mass storage controller," and I installed the Promise Drivers. It boots up as "ULTRA DMA 5" so it seems to be working.

Was that the correct way to fix that problem? Any Promise Ultra100 users out there?

Yup, that was it. Pretty much all drive controllers that aren't part of the system board's chipset are treated as SCSI, whether they're SCSI or IDE. Ultra DMA 5 is ATA/100, so you should be OK.

I'm getting a Promise later this week for use with my IBM 75GXP as well. How's your IBM drive running with the Promise compared to the onboard IDE? Any noticeable speed difference?

To be honest, I can't tell a difference. Although, its only been in a few hours. How would I see a difference, opening programs?

I put the IBM 75GXP drive in my 233 mmx computer and it went pretty fast at UDMA 2 but when i put my promise ultra 100 in, the drive screamed i could have sworn that i was on my 1.1 ghz system.
