I just bought an Abit KT7A-Raid motherboard with an Athlon Thunderbird 1.2GHz processor and 256MB PC133 7.5ns Micron memory. The CPU fan comes on and all, so the motherboard is getting power, but for some reason nothing is coming on the monitor. Actually, I have the CPU fan connected to my power supply (300W Deer DR-A300ATX). I do however have a 60 mm Sunon KD1206PTB1 fan that spins at 4500 RPM plugged into the fan1 port and still get the same result. Ive tried both AGP and PCI video cards with the PCI card plugged into different slots and no go. Ive tried putting the memory in different slots. Ive cleared the CMOS by moving the CCMOS1 jumper from pins 1-2 to pins 2-3 for several seconds and returned it to pins 1-2 as well as holding the Insert key while rebooting. Finally Ive tried hooking up the bare minimum components, including my video card, memory, cpu, ATX power connector, and power on/off switch and still no dice. I get no beeps at all from the PC speaker while trying these things. Anyone got any other ideas? Is there any way to tell if the motherboard or processor is fried without installing the processor in another motherboard?

I am not too experienced in this area, but doesn't the lack of beeps mean the motherboard is dead?

Sounds like another Abit has bitten the dust before usage.. Unfortuantely the RMA rates on the KT7a are really high, no beeps means the motherboard is dead, no CPU would at least yield monitor output.

If the mobo powers up I would think its OK. A short in the board usually stops the ATX power supply from powering up. Triple check your video all the way before you give up.

Have you tried it with no video card at all? Does it beep without a video card?

Try clearing the CMOS, pulling the power cord from the PSU, pressing the power button a few times, putting the cord back in, and powering up.

It is very important to remove the power cord when you try to clear the CMOS - otherwise it will not work - we had the same problem on my mates computer - works fine all day long now...
No problems of that nature on my KT7A though :)

OK, as unlikely as it seems, I was able to correct a problem just like this by changing the memory module to a similiar one from different manufacturer. I've also heard other people complaining that the KT7a won't boot after adding more memory even if the memory works fine in another system. The award BIOS should sound a POST beep code for almost any kind of memory problem, though.
Also, make sure that the beeper connector is plugged right and that the mobo ain't short circuited by the case! (KT7 will boot up normally even if all the connectors (beeper, power...) are oriented in wrong direction, but the beeper won't work and you won't get any POST signals even if there were some!)

Thanks for all your help guys. Ive tried clearing the CMOS by first pulling the power cord, moving the CCMOS1 jumper to pins 2-3 to clear, then back to pins 1-2, reinserting the power cord, and it didnt work. I also cleared the CMOS, pulled the cord, reinserted it, and still didnt work. Ive also tried removing the memory as well as the video card and I still get no beeps. Does this mean the motherboard is fried? Is there feasibly any other reason my computer wont even begin to boot?

Try leaving the jumper pins set to 2-3 as the manual may be wrong. Try booting it like that and see what happens.

What kind of activity do you see on your floppy light? Does it light when first polled and go out or stay on all the time or never come on?

Floppys hooked up wrong/backwards or simply not hooked up can exhibit the same problem your are describing on the ABIT KT-7.

I read your post quickly but I don't believe you have removed the motherboard and placed it on a piece of cardboard next to the case and fired it up. If both of the above are unsuccesful, I'd buy/borrow a new P/S and try it. Also reseat your CPU and be sure the thermistor under it isn't protruding too high keeping the CPU from seating.

Keep us posted on your progress and don't give up.

Try plugging in a Fan in to connection FAN1 and a second fan into connection FAN2. Don't ask me why, but my Abit would not even boot unless two fans were connected. Let me know if it works.

check to see if the core is getting hot
what you want to do, is have one finger on the bare exposed chip, and the other on the power cord

turn it on
if it gets hot rip out the power cord
now you know the chip is getting power

if you get a big shock off the core like I did with my 566 I bought from kami, the core is cracked on the corner and you need a new chip and to be more careful when installing the heatsink

also, seabuck has the right idea
abit has this thing that if there is no fan activity on one of the headers, the system wont boot
I think it even has to be the cpu fan on the cpu header
try switching the fans around, and using all the headers at once if necessary

and be careful!!
