I'm trying to share a cable modem connection with a diamnod homefree 10mb phoneline networking kit. Both computers are running windows 2000 professional. The two pci cards are installed and they say "connected at 10mbps."

The problem is that even though they say that they are connected, the client isn't able to do anything. The client doesn't see the server in network neighborhood in computers near me.

The network card for the cable modem is a different brand (intel) from the networking ones, so that's not an issue.

Internet connection sharing is enabled on the intel adapter. The server's ip on the diamond card is the 192.168.xxx number. The clients ip can be set to either obtain automatically or I will enter it manually, still nothing.

As far as we get it is when ie is launched it says connecting to msn.com and then it seems to find the ip address. Then it hangs forever and times out. During this process the connection icon shows the transfer of 1 packet each time ie is openned.

Pinging from the command prompt brings 100% packet loss. The drivers are the latest win2k ones from diamonds website.

Connection is urgently needed for the fall semester. Please help is you have any suggestions tia.

Set the server nic(phoneline nic) IP 192.168.0.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0 and select "disable wins resolution" then set the client nic, IP 192.168.0.2 and subnet 255.255.255.0 and set the gateway to IP 192.168.0.1 and also select "disable wins resolution".

Give each computer it's own unique name but use the same workgroup name. Now setup the Intel nic howerever your ISP says to. This page should help you alot also. http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/lansetup2.htm
