OK, this thing is getting on my nerves now. Got a LiteOn 12x10x32x burner with the EZ CD Creator 4.02c. I decided to drop the drive into my old Compaq Presario in order to backup a whole slew of mp3s before wiping the drive. The IDE cables in the Presario don't seem to be split, but rather, they feature only two plugs, one for the mobo and one for the drive. I thought this was wierd, but the lack of expansion bays probably makes it prohibitive anyway. Anyway, as a result, I set the drive jumper to "Master." and put the power cable in. I left the CD audio cable out, but that shouldn't matter.
I powered up and Win98 identified the drive and that was step one. I put in the driver disk and ran the install program, and it gave me some cryptic-looking screen, and that was done. I thought I was all set until I rebooted and installed EZ CD Creator, and found that I couldn't burn anything. I added some mp3's to the queue and clicked on "Create CD," and the thing tells me that no supported CDRW, or something close to that. So, I run "Win Checkup," and that craps out and gives me errors telling me that either the server is down, or I'm behind a firewall. It's not likely that either is the case, as I'm not behind a firewall, and I'm obviously getting online to post this, so my connection should be fine. Could the server really be down?
Another quirky thing is that I got two BSoDs the two times I installed the program. After the first BSoD, I rebooted and the install went smoothly. I then uninstalled after it wouldn't burn, then tried to reinstall and got another BSoD. I rebooted and the install went through fine again.
Also, "Device Manager" shows my drive as a "CDROM." Is this right? The driver is for "Generic CDROM." I would find this odd, if it wasn't for the fact that I ran the driver install program from te floppy, as well as downloaded it from online. Should it say "CDRW," or at least "LITEON xxxxx?" Someone throw me a bone here, b/c I'm getting rather annoyed. PEACE.
