PLEASE help with EZ CD Creator

OK, this thing is getting on my nerves now. Got a LiteOn 12x10x32x burner with the EZ CD Creator 4.02c. I decided to drop the drive into my old Compaq Presario in order to backup a whole slew of mp3s before wiping the drive. The IDE cables in the Presario don't seem to be split, but rather, they feature only two plugs, one for the mobo and one for the drive. I thought this was wierd, but the lack of expansion bays probably makes it prohibitive anyway. Anyway, as a result, I set the drive jumper to "Master." and put the power cable in. I left the CD audio cable out, but that shouldn't matter.

I powered up and Win98 identified the drive and that was step one. I put in the driver disk and ran the install program, and it gave me some cryptic-looking screen, and that was done. I thought I was all set until I rebooted and installed EZ CD Creator, and found that I couldn't burn anything. I added some mp3's to the queue and clicked on "Create CD," and the thing tells me that no supported CDRW, or something close to that. So, I run "Win Checkup," and that craps out and gives me errors telling me that either the server is down, or I'm behind a firewall. It's not likely that either is the case, as I'm not behind a firewall, and I'm obviously getting online to post this, so my connection should be fine. Could the server really be down?

Another quirky thing is that I got two BSoDs the two times I installed the program. After the first BSoD, I rebooted and the install went smoothly. I then uninstalled after it wouldn't burn, then tried to reinstall and got another BSoD. I rebooted and the install went through fine again.

Also, "Device Manager" shows my drive as a "CDROM." Is this right? The driver is for "Generic CDROM." I would find this odd, if it wasn't for the fact that I ran the driver install program from te floppy, as well as downloaded it from online. Should it say "CDRW," or at least "LITEON xxxxx?" Someone throw me a bone here, b/c I'm getting rather annoyed. PEACE.

Go here to update ezcd from 4.02 to 4.03b. Maybe then EZCD will recognize the drive correctly. Good luck.

Sounds like your "Aspi" drivers aren't installed correctly; a frequent problem and easy to fix. Easiest way to do it is to run "Aspi_me". However, first you have to set your pc's calendar to sometime in 1998, because the program was meant to be updated and was last done so in that year. Won't run if you leave the calendar where it's at.

So, download it here: Aspi_me

2. Set your calendar to 1998

3. Run Aspi_me.

4. Set calendar back to 2001. (Aspi_me doesn't give you an easy way to exit after running...so just use ctl-alt-del and stop it from task manager so you can set calendar back before rebooting.) If you don't set your calendar back before rebooting, you might get some innocuous error with your antivirus program, etc. No biggie.

5. Now, your burner should work, as Aspi_me will install all the proper Adaptec "Aspi" layer files you need. It will install version 4.57, which was current from 1998. If you're interested, Adaptec has updated their drivers to 4.60. But I know, you're asking, "why not just install the latest Adaptec drivers?"

The Adaptec driver upgrade file (Aspi32.exe) won't install to upgrade your drivers unless it sees a complete set of Aspi drivers installed. The classic catch-22. Comprendo? That's why you need to run Aspi_me first. Aspi_me will install version 4.57 for you (which works perfectly fine, by the way). Then, since you'll have a complete set of Aspi layer files, the Adaptec driver update file (aspi32.exe) will install fine.

6. So, if you really want the most current drivers (hey, why not?), get aspi32.exe from Adaptec's site after you've run aspi_me and have rebooted. Here's the link: Adaptec's Aspi Drivers 4.60 (after you've run aspi_me)

Thanks a lot for the help guys. I installed EZ CD Creator 5 and it works fine now. I think it just needed an updated version. I don't understand why LiteOn would package a version of the software that doesn't support the hardware though. PEACE.
