[UPDATE]
I have an i7-920 machine with a super motherboard: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2959#ov

The CPU support list mentions several Xeons, but does NOT list the line that includes the X5650.

It does mention this on the front page of the link:
Supports new generation Intel 32nm 6-core processors
Supports the newest Intel® Core™ i7 processors in socket LGA1366 with QPI 6.4 GT/s

The Xeon X5650 seems to fit the description but is not in the CPU support list. ARK: http://ark.intel.com/products/47922/Intel-Xeon-Processor-X5650-12M-Cache-2_66-GHz-6_40-GTs-Intel-QPI

I need to be nearly certain it'll work before potentially wasting $100 on something I'm then stuck with.

Would YOU spend ~$75 knowing there's a 50-50 chance you've thrown your money away?

I suppose I'm not broke-ass poor... but I can't help but still penny-pinch. I hate waste. 😉

Well yes, actually, about $110 last year as a matter of fact. 😉

Don't see how its throwing $75 away. You can flip it for a $10 to $15 loss at most. Or buy it from a seller that accepts returns. Then its like a $3-$5 loss.

Sorry I doubted you... found this too: http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/1172271

Sure looks like you were right and it should work fine. Pity the local unit I found was 4-core not six! Still, I suppose it's time to get an ebay profile or get an experienced friend to buy it for me.

Not drying up, there's still plenty & that guy will take $70..
The OP stated he doesn't have an ebay account, so I provided Amazon link...
