Please help windows wont boot and everything i have tried doesnt work

i booted up my computer this morning and i got this error message:

\windows\system32\config\system....missing or corrupt!

i have searched online and was told to put in the xp disk and run the recovery console. whenever i try and do this it just freezes on where it asks me to select which windows i want to log in to ( i only have one )
i tried putting it in abother system but it wont let me access it. i dont have any password on it though.

is there anything i can do?

please help!
