please help - usb modem acting up

hi all,

thanks in advance for all the advice given in the past, and for any advice on this topic!! you guys rock!

anyway, here's the setup:
3 computers at our apartment. one cable modem. we're too cheap to buy a router (although this may change), so each one of us unplugs the other's ethernet cable (or in my case, the usb cable) from the cable modem when he needs to use the internet. this ghetto arrangement has been working ok so far.

2 of us run win XP. one runs mac osX.

today, i came home and wanted to use the 'net (I left my system on). so, I unplugged the roomie's cable and replugged my usb cable into the modem. all of a sudden, winXP said, "detecting new hardware...new hardware found....installed 'unknown device'.

I was like, WTF- this automatic installation never happened before, PLUS why isn't it calling this "uknown device" Motorola Surfboard SB4100???? Naturally, the internet didn't work after that. So I tried to uninstall the device, reboot to see if it would auto-reinstall (windows reinstalled it as "unknown device"), and tried to even install from the modem cd. however, when i tried to install from the modem cd (correct drive path and all), windows said "this disc contains no data about your hardware." and when I tried to click on driver properties of this "unknown device", it said "no drivers are installed or loaded for this device."

this happened twice today, and both times I had to use system restore to fix things.

WHAT is going on???

thanks!
