Here's what I've got, my primary computer is running Win 2K pro, and has a cable internet connection which works fine. It also has a second network card which works fine. My secondary computer is running Win98SE and has a single nic, also known to be working fine. I also have a older Base 10T hub.

When I try to connect the two computers using the hub or a crossover cable I can't get it to work. They both have exactly the same workgroup name, and they have different names. They have both been set up for having their entire hard drives shared. Not the way things will stay, but I figured for the purposes of setup fine. All the CAT5 I'm using has been tested to be fine. I've poured over the FAQ's and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong... The eventual goal is to get internet sharing, but I can't even get the bastards to see each other. When I check the properties of the connection from the Win2K computer it's sending packets but not getting any back. I've also disabled my firewall and virus protection.

I've eliminated a hardware problem by lots of substitution I think, so somewhere my configuration is wrong, but I just can't figure it out. Thanks for any help.

Break down and spring for a $25 router. Make your life MUCH less difficult and give u a bit of protection as well.

Have you tried pinging each ip? If not, do so and see if each connection is established.
from command C: prompt, Ipconfig to get each ip address and ping each from each computer.

If that is not so, check your NIC connection setting, TCP/IP -->Advanced-->Win---check that TCP over Netbios is used on each.

You may have to manually assign each an ip address (if using the hub on the W2k machine, which I recommend over crossover cbls).
If so, enter your ISP as your IP gateway. Get that by typing from c: prompt "ipconfig /all"
Each can be set as 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 and 255.255.255.0 as subnet.
Default Gateway should be your ISP's ip add. something like 24.196.222.1

This is all I know, but hopefully it will stimulate one of the tech's to correct anything.
