Need your help with a processor upgrade...

I am interested in building my own PC from scratch, so in the meantime
I have been studying my PC to learn...

I have a Dell Dimension XPS B 866r, running windows 98se.

I have done some investigating and the motherboard is an oem
intel vc820 using the i820 (camino) chipset.

I currently have a slot 1 P3 866MHz cpu and 128 MB PC700 ECC RDRAM.

I am wondering, what kind of speedup would I see if I put in
a 1GHz P3? Where would I buy one? From my research, my
motherboard will only go up to 1GHz....

Thanks for all the help.

in my estimation, you might see a 4-5% increase in performance, it aint worth it
if you want a boost, get some more ram but i wouldn't bother with the cpu.
check prices here

oh and btw WELCOME TO ANANDTECH n00b😉

Thanks very much dude! Should I go with ECC or nonECC memory? What's the difference?
I figure I ought to toss the PC700 and fill her up with PC800, so I can take advantage of the
PC800 speed...

i don't know much about rdram, but ECC is error correction code and you don't really need it- those who do need it, know😉
