I recently received an email saying that a chargeback process was initiated because some dick ebay bastard says he got the wrong item when I sent him the exact item he ordered! I have had a perfect record on ebay for almost 2 yrs! But anyway, I recently closed the paypal account I used to receive the payments about a week ago. Can they still somehow charge me back or hold me accountable for this money??? (around $240) I can't click through the link they gave me to dispute the trasaction because when I do it tells me to login to my account, and when I log into my new account, it says im not authorized to view the transaction. Is there someway they will ruin my credit or something if they can't get into my account or will they just charge the bank account I had on my old account??

Well does anyone know if they can do anything with my old account? Then I wouldn't have to worry about it or respond to it.

Just curious but what made you shut down your old paypal account and start a new one?

Dude, you're gonna look guilty if you closed down the account before this was resolved. Not the best move. But I seem to remember that once you close the account they can't do anything with it/to it.

I closed the account because it was in my mom's name and when I started doing this stuff I was a minor.......now I am 19 and have my own account/credit card/credit history, so I wanted the paypal account in my name!!!!! I DID NOT CHEAT PPL.

Hubris, are you charge they won't try to ruin my moms credit or charge her old bank account???!

don't panic ... I had the exact same problem last month... I posted here about it ... mine was much worse however...

just call them up and tell them that you didn't authorize those transactions. You are protected at all levels if you never authorized any of them. they will tell you to fill out an online form of unauthorized use of your account or something. After you fill that out they will do everything to fix the problem and absolutely no charges should be incurred on your account.

If they do charge then you bitch like hell.

RIGorous1, I don't think you understand the situation. I received payment from a ebay customer for some expensive books. He thinks I sent him the wrong ones, when I cleary stated what books I was auctioning off. Now he filed a complaint with paypal and they sent me an email saying they are initiating a chargeback on my payal account. HOWEVER, that paypal account is already CLOSED.

Dude, you're in a world of hurt.

Go to www.paypalsucks.com

Yes, they can take the money out of your linked bank account. I would cancel the bank account immedietly. I would also cancel any credit cards that you have linked to the account. Yes, they will threaten you with a collection agency.....good luck!

Send a private message to paypaldamon (pretty sure thats spelled correctly). He's paypals online employee and frequents forums to help with problems such as this. Did the guy send the books back to you?

I kinda got semi-screwed just not too long ago. Basically someone bought an item from me, something happend to the item, I TRIED to refund the person's money and basically I somehow had less than the amount that I needed to refund back to him. So they dug into my checking account and sent an eCHECK to the guy for the entire amount while I still have that entire amount they sent less one dollar. And now it's a total mess but I finally fixed it up with my account.

Good luck trying to get help through their e-mail system. It's just regurgitated spew that they send back to you.

You better call, they'll ding you or your moms credit if it turns out they decide to blame you. Leave negative feedback for the bidder too.

Hi,

Unfortunately the charge back received was for merchandise quality (not covered under our Seller Protection Policy).

It is important to note that the charge back could have happened even if you accepted payment through another medium for a credit card payment.

My friend had a problem like this a few years back, when PS2's just came out. He bought a PS2 early and sold it on ebay for a healthy chunk of change, then the buyer said he never received it, and did that chargeback. My friend got screwed. Paypal sucks.

Paypal for high demand items, rare, or high price items is NEVER a good idea. My cutoff is $10 for selling a rare item, $100 for selling a common item, and $50 for buying anything. Neither party in the transaction is well protected, though the BUYER has much more protection overall, and the ability to abuse that protection without the system batting an eye.

Anand trades get a little more leeway on the buying side, but people who take Paypal are few and far between nowadays

Maybe the seller should've insisted the buyer to pay for insurance...

WTF?!?!? DOES THAT MEAN I CAN GO AND F**KING ORDER A COMPUTER OFF EBAY, GET IT IN FINE CONDITION, AND SAY I NEVER GOT IT, OR THAT I GOT A 1MHZ COMPUTER INSTEAD OF A 1000MHZ

THIS IS NOT FAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi techie133,

That is an issue with credit cards in general - it is not limited to PayPal (charge backs). In the example you provided (claiming to not have received), a seller could protect themselves by following the Seller Protection Policy. Merchandise quality charge backs are not covered under this policy (claims of non delivery and credit card fraud only). The same applies to saulbadguy's comments.
