On My previous system, I had temperatures of about 47-53 deg C IDLE (pretty high, eh?) for my 1.4 ghz cpu with a NoiseControl Silverado HSF. NOW, I just replaced my cpu, old mobo, and hsf with an athlonXP 1800+, Gigabyte MOBO, and Thermaltake Volcano 7+ HSF (All listed in my signature below for further reference). My idle temperatures are around 54-54 deg C, using Arctic Silver III and this good hsf. I don't understand how in the world they are so HIGH!? Can someone please help me figure out what is still causing these high temps--I thought it might be the ram since that is one of the only components I have used in both systems. Could this ram be heating the motherboard somehow and thus heating my cpu? My TEMPERATURES are as follows for the current setup (one in sig): CPU: 53-54 deg C, Motherboard: 43 deg C!!!!!

How many case fans? What size and what direction are they blowing? Location of the fans would also be helpful? What progam are you using to monitor the temps?
 
Is it really hot in your room?

Ambient (room temp) has a direct correlation to temps. Summers here and I expect to see alot of complaints about stability when people don't use/have airconditioning of some kind or another.

Otherwise its probably as Minendo is suggesting. You have poor case air flow.
 
I have two intakes and one exhaust just on the case, then of course is the power supply, rounded ide cables, good hsf, I just don't get it! Ever seen a lian li pc68+?? My case is a giant heatsink for crying out loud and my temps are the worst out of everyone I know *sniff* 🙁
 
dang! 54 idle!?!

this is just a suggestion, but ... have you tried removing the heat sink and reattaching it .. maybe its making poor contact with the cpu??

and what about the program you're using to read off the temps? maybe the program is incorrectly reporting the values??
 
First off, keep in mind that temp readings will vary from one motherboard manufacturer to another.
Your case temp may be higher because the case temp probe may be in the path of the air flowing off of your HSF. See if you can find the case temp probe and see if it's in the path.
Verify that your HSF is on correctly, there is only one way it will fit propperly. I had a freind put his on the wrong way "because it was easier to put on". Make sure the HSF isn't hanging on the raised edge of the cpu socket.

Just for a frame of reference:
With my Epox 8K7A+ and TBird 1.33GHz I was running in the low to mid 40's C for cpu temp, now with the Abit KR7A and XP2000 I run in the low 50's C. I've gone over 60C a few times, which never happened before, but the system is still stable.

My theory as to why the temps are higher is that the pads on the XP's are firmer than the ones on TBirds. I don't plan on putting that theory to the test, unless I have to.
 
Ladies and Gentlemen, I have an answer for you.

The KT333 chipset does not monitor the same as the 266/266A or other previous chipsets. That is to say, everything you know is wrong. Adjust your temperatures -5deg C from what they read as, and you'll be correct. If you're getting voltage reporting, much less ACCURATE voltage reporting, PLEASE TELL ME HOW! (RPMs aren't a problem though, go figure.) So you actually are at 49deg C. Which isn't -that- bad. I have a TBird 1GHz inside a case w/2x 92mm (intake/exhaust) and a Volc5, some ASII, the fans are both high-flow Deltas, and I usually see about 48-50C. It's probably just the KT333 misreporting or the software misinterpreting.

PS - lmmon can't figure out the KT333, and mbmon gleefully bangs it's head against voltages and reports an average of 5-10deg C over actual temps.
 
Well you did change a lot of stuff, and who knows if your previous motherboard was accurate. If its stable and you have no problems with your system just keep plugging and dont worry too much about it. If you start getting errors or lockups then its time to investigate if you are relatively sure you have the heatsink seated properly. My Dual MP system runs that warm easily, no errors in months of usage..
