Too many people put too much of their security emphasis on firewalls---but software and hardware firewalls have the same common weakness---if the computer operator says I want this little piece of candy---the firewall rolls out the red carpet.---but still--any firewall will close many open ports and prevent drive by dumping.
Best have some layers of defenses behind that firewall---its not that hard to set up---its kept my wife and I safe for the past four years or so.
But computer security is a moving target---the malware writers are getting better as time goes along. So I try to keep up on security issues.---Anand tech is a place to start for security awareness---but castle cops, spywarewarrior, and wilders are more security focused. There is almost no end of common sense things one can do to tighten up your computer security
and that starts with a fully patched system.
But to answer a previous question--perhaps the arguably best software firewall is the free comodo one which is now up to version 2.4.18.184. I used to use sygate 5.5 and its also very well if kept configured.----even the windowsp2 firewall is not worthless. Zone alarm is not a bad firewall either---but its pretty heavy on system resources---and so is norton system works. Too much security will hobble even a fast system.---and bring a slower one to a near halt.
But right now---some sort of process control--even if its something fairly light like win patrol---should be on everyone's computer and be a last or next to the last layer of defense. Other process control apps are system safety monitor, process guard, and cyberhawk to name a few.
The biggest security hole in any computer is the ignorance of the user.
