I have some files that are missing, some that are corrupted, after windows found errors on my drive that must have been created when swoppign hardware -- the drive isn't failing (as far as I know), but all I want to do right now is get things back to the way they were. Most of the stuff is ok, I can use Windows quite easily, but some things are not ok...

mmsys.cpl is missing, so I can't change my audio options
I can't remove or update or even use my modem, and the dial up option in my add new connection wizard is greyed out
The help explorer bar has been corrupted so that it looks "old style". Not a tragic loss, but irritating nonetheless

These are just corruptions/changes I noticed. I can only dare to imagine what else is "broken". Can I use the recovery console to undo the damages? NOTE: I have updated WinXP to the maxas new Win Updates have emerged, will this cause hassles with the recovery console?

Good news and bad news, Justin... you should be able to run the repair from the recovery console, no matter what updates you have installed. However, the repair will eliminate all the updates, so you'll spend a loooong time on Windows Update afterward.
