Hi...hopefully this damn thing doesn't lock on me while I'm typing this. Anyway, symptoms: Restart computer...everything seems fine. Mouse all the sudden freezes for a couple seconds, works for a minute, does it again. About the third time it freezes the whole system's locked with no hope of recovery. WTF? This just started happening yesterday out of nowhere. Recent changes to the system: add 256 MB ram (512 total) 3 weeks ago...doubtful this is the cause. Started using AT&T @home...has been working flawlessly for the last week and a half, so who knows. Started using Morpheus...downloaded a file (movie file) that won't work, yet won't let me delete it, and every time I try to it causes an explorer error. I have a feeling this is the cause, but don't know what to do. I did a virus scan w/ updated definitions and nothing showed up. Have defragged and scandisked. I don't know if my mouse (Intelli optical) is going bad and taking the comp with it or what. What should I be looking for with these symptoms? Any help is appreciated...thanks.

//edit: for anyone who reads this post later on and had similar symptoms, it was the mouse that was causing the problems...got a new one and all is good now.

Are you using Win9x? If so, Win9x has a problem with using more than 512MB of RAM. See here for more information.

To resolve the stability problems, you need to make an adjustment to vcache, in system.ini.

Under the [vcache] section, add the entries:
MinFileCache=102400
MaxFileCache=102400

This sets the vcache size to 100MB and should fix your problems.

Just when I was about to say that that took care of it it just did it again...yeah, I'm using WinME. I did a couple tweaks when I first installed the ram that were supposed to take care of any problems related to installing 512, but I must not have done that because those entries didn't exist in my system.ini file. Either way, the problem's still here...thanks for the suggestion...any others?

Make sure that you reboot after making those entries.

Which machine is this? Bitch or Whore?

This would be 'whore'...p3 850, 512 megs ram, asus cubx, 2 x 27.3 wd hdd, etc...what's weird now is that as I type this my mouse is locked...won't move..and it seems when I try to the whole system freezes a for a little bit. I can get around using keyboard (tab, etc...) and it seems like if I use only the keyboard it's alot less likely to lock. I'm really starting to think it's my mouse...do these things have batteries that they run out of or something? I've heard about them dying and MS replacing them...are these the symptoms of a dead optical mouse?

I'm not sure.....see if you can get another mouse and see how your system goes.
