please help! stupid modem question

After downloading some files my modem will no longer connect to my ISP. I hear the modem dialing through my internal speaker however when listening to a phone on the same line i just hear a dial tone, no dialing... eventually dialup networking disconnects and tries again stating "the computer you dialed did not answer" Like i said this just started happening after i downloaded some questionable software...Has anyone heard of a virus that fools your modem into thinking its dialing???

Anything anyone could contribute would be appreicated
 
nope, never heard of a virus that does that- doesn't mean that there isn't one out there. did the "questionable software" want you to subscribe online to something, or anything like that? it could have tried to create a dial up account automatically, and may have deleted/disabled your original dial up settings. have you checked those and made sure they are still there, and the way they should be? have you tried creating a new one, with the original settings?
