Is your server resolving DNS names correctly? Can you go to cmd prompt on the server and do nslookups forward and reverse for, say, anandtech.com?

So next thing to do is start a telnet session from your SMTP server to port 25 on another SMTP server:

telnet 216.99.225.30 25

This will open an SMTP session between your server and another mailserver. Hit enter a few times, then type quit to end the session.

ok i tried it nslookup for anandtech.com and it tells me the IP but than it says dns request time out 2 seconds.

so its not resolving but it did find the IP from the DN.

any ideas?

thanks

ok that all works - and it let me connect but it told me not to mess around w/ that server - so what is next?

please help

Hey RTM (you sell that switch yet?)

Double check your IIS5 settings. Make sure that the smtp service for IIS is not installed or stop that service from running. Your two SMTP services may be fighting over the use of the port... Hope this helps...

i did that 2 - this is messed up - i can resolve names w/ nslookup but i dont think this program is doing it correctily. i can also telnet to a server and it works. there is no damn reason why this wont work other than to just piss me off!

if someone has an idea please LMK

- nope im using that little switch and im selling the big 3com 12 port 10/100 managed thing, its more than i need

I had something similar, I think.

I also think the way I solved was by enabling IIS's SMTP and my mailserver SMTP, but giving them different port numbers.

Play around with this, there aren't that many alternatives. IIS-smtp, yes or no. Mailserver smtp, yes or no. Ports, same or not. I'm pretty sure the answer is there somewhere. At least it was for me. Hope it is for you too.

its still not working! damnit this is frusterating

thanks i will try

BTW what are your clients setup to use? 24 or 25?

<<what are your clients setup to use? 24 or 25?>>

What do you mean by that? Do you mean the browser when sending email?

If so I have no clue.
