Please help resolve an IRQ conflict

I just installed win2K on my computer and noticed I'm not getting sound. I learned that my ethernet and sound card are on IRQ11, even though windows doesn't detect the conflict (surprise, surprise). How do I change the IRQ settings and to what IRQ should I set the sound card? In device manager the screen that shows the IRQ doesn't allow me to change it manually. Please help. Thanks.

Thanks. Can I simply put the sound card in a different pci slot? I don't know if I should reinstall and change ACPI HAL to standard. Seems like that may cause problems too. Also, according to the article two devices should be able to share the same IRQ. Maybe the problem is not the IRQ?

so in device manager sound card doesn't have any errors next to it?

are you sure the sound isn't just muted?

2 things

1) try removing from device manager and re-installing with newest drivers

2) try switching pci slots

let me know where that gets you

I'm an idiot. The wires in the back weren't connected properly. No hardware conflict but I'm only getting sound from two of five speakers (the two rear ones). The wires are colored to match the sound card input jacks so that can't be the problem. Any ideas?

usually, with problems like that, you have to enable surround output with software that came with your card.

what kind of card is it?

I'm using soundblaster live x-gamer w/ the 5.1 cambridge soundworks speakers. All the wires are plugged in. I reinstalled the software after installing win2k. They don't even have new drivers online! Under device manager I expand the sound icon and see audio codecs, soundblaster live! series, legacy audio drivers, and other things. Is there a chance the win2k drivers are conflicting w/ the ones from sound blaster cd I installed? Thanks.

doesn't sound like a conflict to me

you need to go to the creative playcenter or whatever it's called and enable 4 speaker or 5.1 speaker surround

do you see any options to do that?

It's already on the 5.1 setting. When I choose test speaker it tests each speaker individually. I only hear the sound when it reaches the rear two.

sounds like the wires might still be wrong then....

You're using the analog outs on the soundcard right? and they all go to a subwoofer or something?

I double checked all wires and even downloaded the latest drivers from creative's website, but still only sound from 2 of 5 speakers. I'll try changing pci slots.

Edit: I noticed when it tests the other 3 speakers it's not completely silent, but a very low muffled sound.

weird...are there controls on the subwoofer that you're missing?

let me know how it goes when you change the pci slot

have you ever used these speakers before?

I changed to a different slot but the irq setting is still the same. It's also the same IRQ as the video card and the ethernet card, though it says no conflict. If there was a conflict it would probably mean no sound rather than sound in the rear speakers only. Still looking for suggestions from anyone who reads this. Thanks.
