Heys guys, I have a pretty big problem. Im not sure what it is anymore. Ill explain........ Ive been having problems with my computer locking up for a while now. I was finally able to get a handle on it a while ago by formatting and putting xp on my machine. Now the other day I formatted again so i could put 2k on my machine, cause I was having some problems with XP itself. Now I got 2k installed no problem but today I just set up my network with my laptop and I was d/ling updates for 2k and I d/led the iexplorer6 update. For some reason or another that just screwed up everything, everything was connecting and running fine on my network until I installed that update, since that I cant connect to the internet or my laptop on that computer. Buts that not really the problem. So what I did instead of trying to figure it out I figure Id just format and put 2k on it again, no problem right? So I formatted my hd and proceded to start the 2k install. But now when it gets to the point where its saving the settings and getting ready to restart it locks up right before it finishes saving the settings. Ive tried just rebooting and doing it again about 5 or 6 times, then I tried changing the file system to ntfs and doing it but I get the same problem. I was trying this on a 40gb 7200 maxtor. I had an 8gb so I tried to put 2k on that, but when I try to install it on that it locks up when its copying the sys files over to the hard drive. I have no idea what to do and im fearing its a mobo problem and I may need a new mobo. Does anything have anything or any suggestions that can help me Any and all help will be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you and btw its an FIC 1st Mainboard and im running an 850 socket Athlon with 768 mb ram, and a 40 gig maxtor.

Hey Capero,

Is it possible that the CD you are using to install is not working...you mentioned that it freezes up when you try to copy sys files over...?

Since you have both Win2K and XP, why don't you try re-installing XP and see if you get the same problem. That should identify if it's a hardware error or not.

BTW, are you overclocking or trying to improve performance by changing other BIOS settings? If so, try going back to default settings.

It sure sounds like a stability problem. Some other things to check:

Pop out and re-seat you memory, making sure it is in solid.

What is your CPU temp? Not sure if the FIC displays temperature on startup, but you can probably check it in the BIOS by rebooting right after the lockup. Athlons can run hot.

Also, with 2 HDs and a lot of RAM, you might have a power supply problem.

Well I know that thatecd isnt bad because it copys the files when Im using the 40gig but it froze up when I was trying to put it on my 8 gig for some reason. But I have all my bios settings as default. Nothing is overclocked and yea my board doesnt display temp :( But it shouldnt be running hot because I have two 80mm case fans and one of those cyclone blowers in the bottom of my case and there is a fan rated for a 1.5 cpu on my processor. But I just tried unplugging the 8 gig from the power supply and I took the ide off of it and I took out two of my ram chips and jusng left the 512 in there. Went to install 2k and same problem. So im trying to install 2k right now with my burner unplugged now as well. So ill see what happens here. BTW thanks for all the help guys, ill keep you posted.

Just so that others may benefit with the knowledge on what you did to fix it, can you supply a resolution? It's very possible that some of us may see this problem again on our own systems or someone else may ask. What was the final problem disgnosis, and how did you work around it?

Curiosity killed the cat. Then again, so did the left front tire of my car... :D
