PLEASE HELP no sound in winxp (CT4810)

can't make the damn Ensoniq AudioPCI - Creative Sound Blaster (Vibra) 128 (model CT4810) work in WinXP.
I tried all ensoniq drivers from creative for winxp and win2k to no avail. either no sound at all or weird cracking noises. the speakers are ok btw.
what gives?

what can i do? the drivers from creative and microsft dont work, is it some known issue?
the system is:
asus a7a266-e (ali magik1)
athlon 1600++
512mb pc2100 ram
etc
