please help newbie

I bought a linksys 10/100 network in a box(2 pci networkcards,2 15 ft cat5 cables 1 5 port hub with uplink and software drivers..)ok I hooked the my cable modem up to the uplink port,then i plugged my cat 5 into the back of my pc where i had my cable modem plugged in and plugged it into my hub,then i plugged the other cat 5 into my laptop netgear network card and the other end into the hub,OK my computer works great i can log onto the internet..but i can't see my laptop nor can i log onto the internet with it,Am i doing something wrong..i have the same things in both network settings..
by the way i'm running me on the pc and 98se on the laptop,and i paid 65.00 for the kit is that too much? thank you for reading

Dude, you can't just plug your laptop in your hub and expect it to access the internet. You need some sharing software or hardware to be able to do that unless of course you bought more ips from your isp. check this out. Here
 
The reason you can't share the internet is because you're missing a gateway in that config. You're going to need something to share the connection and "just" a hub won't cut it. Your Modem will only give out 1 ip address. You're going to need something to take that address and then generate one for the other computer. There are many products that do this... Dlink 701, Netgear 314, Linksys also makes a router. Check em out. 😉
