Please Help... New computer has display problems

I just finished building my first computer and powered it up recently. The computer boots up and I can hear all of my fans, HD, etc, but my monitor is having display problems. The images in the POST and BIOS screen are too distorted to read and all of the words look separated and strange. Is something wrong with my video card? I have checked to see if my video card is seated properly in the AGP port many times. I have also double-checked the monitor connections. I bought a GeoForce 4 Ti4400 for my new system and am using my old monitor to set up my computer(my new monitor doesn't arrive until Tuesday). My old monitor that I am using right now is several years old, but I know it works well. Is it possible for a monitor to be too old for a GeoForce 4? It connects perfectly with my video card and seems to have the right type of connection. What is going on? I would appreciate any advice- I have no idea what the problem is.

First thing to do would be to try your new vid card in a different system to see if it is actually functioning properly. Sounds like vid problems to me though.

Would my new Ti4400 even work in my old PIII 450MHz system? It probably doesn't support AGP 4X either. I don't have any drivers installed on my video card yet since I don't have an OS or the internet on my new system.

Sounds like a weak power supply issue to me. What brand and wattage do you have?

I really doubt my power supply is the issue, I'm using the 450W Enermax EG451P-VE PSU.

I'd agree. Lots of people have had similar problems which were caused by a bad psu, which is why I suggested it. Sorry it didn't help.

Actually it may just be your monitor?s native timing and your vid card?s native timings don?t quit match. I have an old Mag 17 inch monitor, (5 + years old) that displays a similar problem when it?s hooked up to a Radeon 8500 or a V5 but it?s fine once Windows starts to load and the display drivers get loaded, (same problem shows up in DOS). When that monitor is hooked up to a V3 or another PC I have with on board vid its post screens are fine. With my Viewsonic the there isn?t a problem with any of the PC?s post screens or when I drop into DOS for BIOS updates.
