Please help: need to know how to figure out theoretical yield

Hey my stupid chemistry book won't tell me. I need to know how to figure out a chemical equations theoretical yield... i'm studying for a makeup test tomorrow... please help me

Simple.


Take the BALANCED chemical equation, and find out how many moles of reactants you have (they should give you a mass of reactants). Using the equation, you can find out how many moles of products you should theoretically get by looking at their ratios in the equation. Then multiply the amout of moles by the molar mass of the products...

Can you give us an example of the exact question? Because Input = Ouput is not exactly true. How are you measuring input and output?

If you had 1/2 O2 + H2 --> H20 ...... for example, you would use 1.5 mol to get 1.0 mol. Last time I checked 1.5 mol does not equal 1.0 mol. Anyway...

I think he meant (mass of reactants) = (mass of products)

But oftentimes, a gas is formed and is lost to the air. Also, most questions will ask for the theoretical yield of one of the products, not all of them.
