Please help. :) Need Power Supply for 3.5GHz X6 + GTX580.

Went a little crazy and bought a GTX580 - and of course I felt the need to finally tweak my system a little bit.

I finally settled with my Phenom X6 @ 3.5GHz + the GTX580 at stock. Of course, my 500w Antec Earthwatts is woefully underpowered for this. I knew it would be, but I brought the little guy to his knees.

All is good when I game - but when I stress test the computer - simultaneously run FurMark (@1080p in window) + OCCT side by side - the computer shuts off...lol

Before I damage something permanently, can anyone recommend a power supply? I haven't bought a PSU in a while so I'd like a recommendation. I don't want to spend that much (~$150), and I'd like to order from somewhere where I can get it by Friday.

Any suggestions?

I am sort of confused by the 8-pin and 6-pin connectors on the card. Is a 6+2 pin connector an 8 pin? What if the power supply has only 6+2 pin connectors? Then what...ugh

I'd like a PSU that will work with no adapters to the card.

System Specs:
GIGABYTE GA-890FXA-UD5 w/Phenom X6 @ 3.5GHz (250x14) Stock volts.
Corsair H50 Heatsink
8GB DDR3 @ 1600MHz 1.65v
Zotac GTX 580 AMP! edition
Intel x25-M SSD + Two 1TB 7200 drives.
LG DVD-RW

Seasonic X650 - $110 Shipped

Amazing PSU. 6+2 pins is typical because otherwise most cards requiring 6 pins simply wouldn't work.

Powering phenom x6 @ 4ghz 1.45v, GTX 470 @ 1.1v, 1 - 1tb drive, 4x 2tb drives, H50 w/ 2 high powered fans + 6 case fans. Kill-a-watt coming in weds/thurs will check power used but im guessing ~350-400.

So 6+2 would fit in the 8 pin connector on the card right? What about the adjacent 6 pin connector? Would the +2 be removable so I can jam it in there? Sorry if I sound dumb...

I also plan to move to an i7 sometime soon - if Bulldozer ends up a bust, will 650w hold up? I'd love to stick with a Seasonic PSU, but should I step it up a bit?

The 6+2 fits in the 8 pin connector and the 6 pin connector will have 2 pins sitting off to the side.

It will be more than adequate for a new cpu, but if you expect to go with sli 580 I would go with the 850. I will likely try 470 sli on my 650 though and I don't expect much trouble although I may not be able to oc my gpus much.

I agree, X650 at the price it's sitting at is an excellent deal. If you're willing to pay $10 more you could get Antec HCP-850, another top line PSU on a huge discount. It's overkill for your current system so don't buy it unless you're fairly sure you'll go dual-GPU within a year or two.

BUT you don't really have to pay that much. Antec Earthwatts 650W is just $50 at the moment. It's a reliable and well reviewed unit.

The i7, manufactured at 32nm, will probably consume less power than your X6 manufactured at 45nm. Bulldozer is manufactured at 32nm but will have a TDP of 125W max so it'd use about the same power as your current CPU. Not that any of this is relevant if you get a 650w seasonic

I went with the Antec HCP-850, as I do plan on SLi'ing sometime soon. Probably overkill, as my monitor can only do 2056x1152...lol

Thanks

EDIT: Changed my mind and got the Seasonic - I trust them better. I kinda had bad luck with Antec before, and I love the modular feature. 🙂

EDIT 2: Ended up buying the Antec after all - hehehe.

The Antec is in, and running perfectly. I've yet to do some solid overclock testing with my rig (24 hour OCCT, couple hours of Furmark) but everything seems perfect so far. Not even a hiccup yet, and I've tried some serious torture. My light bill will be pretty high this month.

Thanks for all of your help guys.
