Please help. My IE5 just stopped working. . .

I have been reading email and surfing tonight. I closed all the windows and then tried to open IE5 again from my task bar and desktop icon and it will not open. Message is "IEXPLORE.EXE is not a valid win32 application". I'm about to panic, then I saw I had a page with a shortcut on my desktop and it open the page. Then I came directly over here to ask for help, please!

What's wrong? Do I need to install IE again?
 
if you rebooted and still got the same message then you might be SOL, try reinstalling see if that helps.

Bump . . in case anyone else has suggestions. I tried to re-install and I get a message that the "INETCFG.DLL" file is missing. It would re-install.

Then I was reading that IE 5.5 has problems so how can I still get IE 5.0.

Thank goodness I had a shortcut to a page on my desktop or I would have no web brower at all.

How come the shortcut on my desktop works, but the icons on the task bar and desktop do not?

Any ideas, anyone, please?
