PLEASE HELP, MY DVD PLAYBACK IS CHOPPPY!!!!!!!!!!!

My dvd playback is very choppy. I don't have any money to go buy new crap so I was hoping there were some tweaks or something. Here are my specs:

P II - 300
160 Meg Ram
8x dvd drive with dma enabled through windows
Voodoo 3 3000

Please give me any suggestions. I use windvd but I can get any dvd player if there is another I should use.

Thank you
mike

Check out my question a few posts down. I solved the problem by enabling DMA on the DVD drive and by installing the latest drivers.

Stealth, he already activated DMA for the DVD-ROM drive.

Enable DMA for your hard drive too, not just your DVD-ROM. Failing that, get a new CPU. Your Voodoo 3 has no significant DVD assist, and really a PII 300 needs something like an ATI Rage 128 with Motion Compensation and iDCT in order to function properly.

Your CPU is on the slow side, so its going to be hard if not impossible to get smooth DVD playback. However, I would suggest that you try using Cinemaster, generaly speaking its the best for slower CPUs.

If you don't want to shell out the cash for a new CPU
you could get a realmagic DVD Decoder. They are only around $50, and have good image quality and run fine on a P166 (I know, I have tried 😉. That way if you ever decided to hook your DVD Player up to a TV you would have the perfect card to do it.

Yeah, a Hollywood DVD decoder is a good option for low $$$.

However, if he gets a new CPU, everything is faster. It's unlikely he'll get a PII 300 to 450 even if his motherboard allows voltage tweaking or he does the pin-taping trick. But for the CPU upgrade I'm assuming you have PC-100 RAM.

You can probably upgrade to a PII 450, or maybe PIII 500 Katmai or something depending on the mobo. If you're really lucky you might even be able to get a Celemine 566@850.

Your spec does look underpowered.

Check here for good advise, or get a graphics card that has iDCT or motion compensation. A Hollywood Plus or a clone ( I have a Golden Melody DVD kit) would be a better choice.
