Please help me with my wireless network!

I'm having a terrible time with my home wireless network. I've got a D-link router (please spare me the cracks on D-link equipment) and a matching D-link wireless access card in my laptop.

I've been battling with this thing since I installed it (I was having the same issue with my Linksys router, before I gave up and decided the new 80211xyz+ supe duper crap to replace my plain old 80211.b). Anyway, I have a simple set up. My router sits upstairs near a doorway and broadcasts the wireless throughout the house. There are very few barriers to disrupt the signal to the laptop, which sits in my living room.

My problem is this: when my notebook picks up my signal (called XYZ for description only), I consistently get an "Excellent" rating. However, FREQUENTLY, Windows XP tells me that one or more wireless networks are available. I have to select "Available Wireless Networks" and go and select my XYZ network and manually click connect. It's picking up the neighbor's wireless networks (stuff called "default" and "linksys" networks, obviously neighborhood networks not set up correctly.). The frustrating thing is that my network connection holds for anywhere from 2-10 minutes and I have to connect again manually. If my computer is in a good mood it will continue to connect without issues and then just drop it again. If it is in a bad mood, it will no longer see my XYZ network and I can't connect. I've removed all other networks from my "preferred" networks, except my own. I don't want to connect on any other network except my own. But my crazy think keeps doing it. I'm at my wit's end.

BTW, I am using WEP, an SSID, a unique Key and also running on channel 11, instead of the default 6. None of this seems to change the fact that my computer will still lose it's connection, or decide to jump on one of these other crappy signals. Help? Anyone???

If you can't get xp to keep your wireless settings setup correctly try using the software that was included with your wireless adapter.

Also under advanced make sure it's setup to access points only and have automatically connect to non preferred is unchecked.

You can go into the advanced section and uncheck the boxes for Connect to Non Preferred networks (like amd said as I now read his whole post). Then setup a profile for your own network and the laptop should only look for your own information and ignore the neighbors stuff.
