We've all seen posts like this. I built my last computer in 2001 and have not kept up with components. I want to build a fairly fast computer without spending a ton of money.

I am really in the dark as to compatibility but have chosen a mother board, CPU and memory and would like to know if the will work together.

Here are the links:

I want at least 1 G of memory.

Ok, folks, where did I screw up? Do you have any suggestions for improvement?

No gaming will be done, just surfing the net, CD/DVD burning, etc.

Present computers are only PIII 1 Gig.

Thanks for reading this.

It is somewhat subjective, but those components do not comprize a "fairly fast" computer. Even without gaming, you could improve alot for general multitasking.

Well, I thought 3 G was fast. Of course, compared to what I have now anything is fast. I welcome any suggestions.

If it were me, and I could afford slightly more, I would go with an AMD processor and motherboard. With the recent drop in prices, you can buy a single core AMD very reasonably. Since you chose an AGP motherboard (which I would also do), you should be able to find a good one also reasonably priced. The only reason that I might consider an Intel processor is if I wanted to go with a core 2 processor, but I have an adversity with Intel in general, so I'm waiting for a AMD quad core. As far as the ram, you need to check with the motherboard manufacturer for compatability aspects.

That's fine. Could you suggest a processor and motherboard?

Thanks.

I don't know what you can afford, so it would be difficult to make any recommendations. However, here is a page for the processors:

http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_attrib.php/page_id=42/vendors[]=AM2/sortby=popular-/start=25

If you could afford a X2, that would be good. But if not, then get the fastest single core that you can afford. As far as motherboards, go with Asus, Gigabyte or DFI. I don't really know anything about the latter, except by reputation.

You can see that I picked low end stuff. I just want to build another computer for myself as a Christmas present. That way I can canabilize one of my computers for the drives and WinXP Home.

Thanks for the prices.

A Christmas present for yourself is not something to be too tight about. If you don't treat yourself good, it isn't too likely that someone else will...unless you would settle for a necktie.

i would suggest to go for the poor man's dual-core, pentium D.

you can go for the newegg motherboard combo special for $138.

EDIT: Better yet, buy the Gigabyte S3 motherboard for $110 and in 3 to 5 years you can replace the pentium D dual core with a quad-core when its sub $100.

Sounds good. Off I go to newegg.

Thanks all. I appreciate your input.
