Please help me, what cpu/mainboard for my computer

Hi everyone, ok i have been having trouble with my AMD ATHLON K7(Classic) cpu and microstar amd 750 irongate chipset... Where i need to upgrade to something that DOESNT FREEZE when loading windows and playing games, and every other application i try running.

so heres where i neeed your help, what cpu and mainboard are the BEST reliable and compatible and wont cause problems with these components

PC133 256 micron tech. RAM
ATI XPERT RAGE 128 chipset 32mb AGP
CREATIVE LABS SOUNDBLASTER LIVE!
19.1gb drive
SONY CD-RW
DVD DRIVE
and a 300watt power supply


and also whats the difference between socket A and slot A? can slot a fans work on socket A cpus? please tell me what cpu/fan/mainboard to get for the cheapest price that works very well. thank you.

Socket A is totally incompatible with Slot A, they're completely different architectures...

ok thanks, one question, i have a 3 packed fan for my athlon 950mhz slot a now, that wont work on socket a then right? and umm i have no clue on how to install mainboards or there software like BIOS and drivers, is there a site that can teach how to install slot a and socket a boards and cpus and the fans and all or could you possibly help me install one ? Thanks again friend.

Nope, the fan you have for Slot A will NOT work for Socket A (it'd be cool if it did though)

As for an install guide, there are tons of different ones out there. Can't link to any off the top of my head though, anyone else wanna step in?

u try upgrading your board bios? that's why u're probably getting some major lock-ups...
also, install the latest irongate agp drivers, and if u have a via southbridge and win95,
install the latest via ide bus master drivers..

should run fine...some times it's the most unusual things that cause your system to hang..

for example, i thought it was my video card for sure causing lock-ups that only occured in
3D APIs, but apparently, it was my sound card drivers...updated from the diamond drivers to
the latest vortex 2 reference, and now it (almost literally) never crashes.

try tinkering around w/ bios settings a little (i.e. AGP aperature sizes - it fixed my crashes from my Savage 2K video card....), and driver configurations/settings.

then change it...

the MSI K7T Pro2A is definitely a stable/good board but only supports socket A whcih are totally incompatible w/ slot A - and u may be ableto use the fan from your slot a proc., but definitely not the heatsink...i'd suggest just getting a heatsink/fan combo if u change form factor.

personally, i'd get a board based on the KT133A chipset, and not hte MSI board or any other KT133 chipset...Epox has a board (EP-8KTA3) that uses such a chipset...there's also a soltek board (i would NOT suggest buying) and a DFI board (AK74-AC)...there are others on the way..and perhaps others i've never heard out alrady out.

ICQ isnt installed for me now, and i would really like to talk to you, cause i have been having this problem for quite some time now and cant seem to fix it, i thought it was my power supply., video card, memory all of that, i dont really know to mess with my BIOS i have this exact board: Microstar k7Pro AMD 750 slot A, and a Classic Athlon 950mhz, my email is Jmfhbk1@earthlink.net could you please p[ossibly help me figure out where to get the BIOS, drivers and help me twink with the system to get it running? Ok for some reason your email isnt working, i downloaded the BIOS and Drivers and my system is still freezing and locking up, anything else you recommend?
