I've got some P4 2.2 GHz systems with a 20" CRT that I'm trying to protect from power surges/blackouts with a UPS. I'd like the systems to run for at least 5 minutes before the battery power runs out... What size UPS would I need?

Also, how would adding a 17" CRT monitor to the system (along with the 20" CRT) affect these numbers?

I understand that APC is about the best one can buy... What happens when you use a "cheap" UPS?

How many does "some" mean. That would make a huge difference. The monitors are going to be the killer however.

There will be a separate UPS for each system -- not one UPS for several... Sorry for the confusion...

Im assuming he probably meant what wattage ups per each system (otherwise youd need a power generator to keep all of these in one line :) )

Im not much of an expert in upses but Id say you'll need something in the 1k area (W wise) since the 20inchers will be indeed some serious killers (higher with the secondary 17s)

Anyone else have some ideas? I figured 800 - 1k... Does this sound about right for 5 minutes of operation? Is there an *exact* way to calculate?

The problem with a cheap UPS is that the switch to battery backup won't happen quick enough. I had this happen with a Belkin UPS in that when the power when out, the computer still lost power for a split second causing it to reboot and lose what I was working on.

I since picked up an APC, and have tested it a couple times by pulling the plug from the wall, and the computer stayed on fine.

I've got an XP2100 system, with a 21" CRT, along with a network switch, cable modem, and router. It goes for about 3-4 minutes on a 675VA Tripplite UPS. So you'd probably want 800VA or more, especially if you want another monitor on it.
