To give a history, I live in a rural area, and for years and years my only internet option was dial up. And to add injury to insult, without buying another landline phone connection, and another ISP subscription, there was no way for my wife and I, with separate desktop PC's, to be on line at the same time. That somewhat changed in 2004, when I connected both PC's with a crossover cable and windows ICS and dial up internet connection sharing became possible. As long as my wife and I did very low bandwidth stuff, we could share a dial up connection and still both get something. But still it damn near wrecked our marriage as we were always at each others throats for hogging all the bandwidth.
And other than a satellite connection which I rejected as too slow and not worth it, that did not change for me until 11/2009. When Verizon finally set up a filler 3G tower only 2 miles from my house. And suddenly 3G Verison internet became a viable solution for us. The downside was the $60.00/mo price, but that was somewhat softened by losing a $10.00/mo ISP and an almost $10.00/mo needed internet answering machine. As suddenly my wife and I had more than enough bandwidth to share with 3G EVDO, no router needed, as the Same ICS still worked rock stable. And even better yet, I learned if bought my own USB Verizon EVDO modem, I could avoid a 2 year contract and go month by month instead for my two desk top PC's at a stationary location. And $20.00 and ebay got me such an used 3G EVDO modem shipped. Which I did in 12/2009 and have retained the same set up ever since. At the same time I knew there was another 3G verizon modem option, namely a MIFI 2200 modem whose main virtue was to function as a wireless router so Irejected that choice out of hand, After all, what good does a wireless router do me, when my two stationary desk computers have no wireless connection abilities. Which concludes my history past thinking.
Because recent facts have come to my attention that changes my thinking regarding a MIFI options and gives a number of very good reasons to switch to a Verizon 3G MIFI device instead.
1. I have found out, that such a MIFI device can function exactly like my prior 3g USB modem, but instead of costing $60.00 a month, it only costs me $50.00 a month instead. And given it gives me the same 5GB cap, and it only cost me $20.00 on the used market to purchase, I am on that point dealing with only a 2 month payback. But it gives me another option I can't get with my existing USB modem, I can opt to pay $50.00/ month for the same 5GB cap, I can also opt to pay $80.00 a month for a 10 GB cap. And because my wife and I consume a lot of bandwith simply because we spend a lot of time on line, the 10 GB cap sounds really attractive. As it is, we often exceed the 5GB cap and have to pay expensive overage charges.
2. But finally I can cut to the chase and really need some help because of issues I am totally ignorant of, simply because a Verizon MIFI device has dual configuration abilities.
As I noted, it can behave exactly like a USB modem, but if so connected it loses all wireless router abilities. But if not hardwired to any computer, it can function as a wireless router for up to five computers on battery power or wall power. Should I choose to network in my two desktop XP computers by wireless means, I would have to add some way to make them capable. As it is I have a laptop that is wireless capable, I could add that too in the process, and since my wife is thinking of purchasing some WIFI capable And roid type device, she could it too. And I have to confess I kkow nothing about wire less security.
