Please help me troubleshoot overclocking with NF7-S V2

Hey guys,
I need somebody to shed some light on me here,
I've been battling with this all night.
Let me first tell you my specs:

NF7-S V.2
XP2100+ AIUHB - With L12 Mod
Volcano 12
Merlin Bios D25 - Version 2D
Corsair value PC3200 2x256
160 gig Maxtor 8mb 7200 IDE
GIGABYTE fx5900xt
ANTEC SL400 PSU

My problem is I keep getting an error with P95 at 200x11 (1.85V) & 200x10 (1.85V). When I tried to do the memtest, It freezed on me after 5 min. So I tried another RAM, this time a single channel 512MB corsair value, put it on Slot#3, and damn everything went fine. I ran P95 for 4 hrs straight @200x11.5 (1.875) with no problem. Temp is fine @45 on load during p95. Even played with BIOS a little: CPU interface: disabled, FSB/DRAM: 6/6, and RAM set @Optimal & By SPD.

Any ideas what causing the instability with dual channel? I know I just got the ram & mobo from the forum. Could this be a mobo RAM slot issue or ram issue?

I would really appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks guys

You may know this but on dual channel for the NF-7 you put one stick in slot 3 and the other in 1 or 2 also you should be setting your ram on the expert setting. corsair value is 2.5-3-3-10 or 11, I believe. Did you flash to the Merlin bios or did it come with it?

Also try the 256mb sticks one at a time to try and weed out a bad stick, memtest looping test 5 usually does it for me.

what the above poster said, but boards can be pickier about dual channel, you may want to try the 2 256 in slot 1&2 and forget dual channel, I doesn't help much unless you are using an IGP.

Thanks for the response guys.

I did try a different slots for the dual channel: 1 & 3 - 2 & 3, and memtest still freezed after a few minutes. One thing I never did was setting the RAM manually (expert set). I only tried BY SPD & OPTIMAL. Do you think this may cause a problem for Corsair RAM?

Could this be a BIOS issue as well? the bios came with it when I bough the mobo from the forum.

What do you have the ram voltage set at? Spd and optimal are usually pretty good settings but you need to find the best settings for your ram. On my NF-7 with either Mushkin or Corsair value ram 2.5-3-3-10 or 11 works best(you may need 3-3-3-10 or 11). You should try the two 256mb sticks individually to see if you have a bum stick.

More than likely it's a memory problem. I would consider trying the latest Abit bios once you can rule out the memory. Do you have access to another pair of dual channel ram to try?

Hey Toro,
I think it was the ram that is causing the problem, bec. I bought a Kingston valueram DC, and everything was fine. Pass memtest86 with no errors after 2.5 hrs. My problem now is, it is still unstable @11x200 @1.9V. I put the ram voltage at default. what do you think is the problem now? I'm started to think is the CPU, but XP2100+ aiuhb with L12 mod should be able to handle that right? I don't want to push the Vcore that much bec. of the cooling too. Do you think other bios will help me?

Thanks again for all your help.

Glad to hear your having some better luck, my thought would be the cpu just won't go that high but I noticed in your first post you had it running just fine at200x11.5 1.875volts. have you tried it with that stick of ram again to see if it is stil stable? did you try any gaming? I've had memtest and prime pass for hours only to have my game crap out from an unstable overclcock.

The L12 mod is that something thats done to the motherboard or the cpu?

Few things I would try is resetting bios performance defaults and then carefully go through your bios settings and make sure ram timings voltages are what you want, also check and raise your chipset voltage. Try stronger psu(although yours may be fine) lots of different things could be holding you back. Just get familiar with your board and I'll dig up a few good links for you on the abit Nf7. Shes a great board just don't give up on it.

Here is a great site for the NF-7 with good tips. Here is the Abit message board I've found some pretty sharp guys on there.

I'm not big on flashing the bios but when I did try a moded one, Mantray D12 bios I think it was pretty slick took my bus speed up over 230 but I could never get the system prime stable after that. I had to flash back to the latest official abit bios to regain stability.
