This is an upgraded Compaq 7AP140. 800 MHZ Athlon Processor, 384 MB RAM (128 original / 256 added later). Seagate 120 GB HDD, Windows XP Home. New Antec case with power supply.
System is used by my mother as a basic HTPC and for e-mail/word processing and has been running flawlessly. Stable, fast booting, no unnecessary software, etc.
I recently installed a Lite-On DVD burner to replace the dying DVD-ROM drive and the slow CD-RW drive.
Today, the system crashed repeatedly. OCA said the error was caused by a device driver, but did not specify.
It now crashes consistently when I mount an ISO image of a DVD movie and attempt to play it. My immediate thought was that either Daemon-Tools was messed up, or a video issue from attempted playback.
Then, the phone rang in the house, and the PC rebooted. Major WTF? moment, but my mother later collaborated that this has happened at least once before. BTW, she's on dial-up.
Another anomaly was that clicking on the Start button produced the Start menu but with some minor delay and artifacting. Didn't think much of it until later I clicked Start, it artifacted a fair amount, then reboot on me.
The video card is the stock card that came with the Compaq - I don't have the model info handy.
Any thoughts where I should point my diagnsotic efforts? Obviously, I'd like to get her all new parts, but that's not a cost-effective option right now.
