I guess it is time to see if there are any good motherboards with slots for a crossfire or sli configuration for the video and NCQ . I'm thinking about going AMD this time around - maybe the 4600 x2 or a Pentium D 940.

I'm not married to ATI or nVidia and am open to AMD or Intel. The things I do want though are dual video cards for whichever I go with. Right now I'd like to get a x1900 although a month from now nVidia should have something at least as good (and 3 months from then ATI...) I'd love to get a dual chip 1900 so that I could eventually have 4 GPUs! I wonder when those cards will be coming out. I would definitely get a single card if it was the same price as 2 1900s so I could eventually add more video processing power.

if ure going for AMD 4600x2 , then either get this
Asus A8R-MVP: ( ULI Southbridge , but only 6 channel Soundcard )
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131584
or
Abit AT8 : ( ULI Sounthbridge , and 8channel and SILENT OTES )
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813127230

and if u want Intel , then the 975X mobo is worth the power .
btw Crossfire Intel mobo are appearing , rite now the ECS one . wait and maybe u get a better mobo in a week .

Peace & ciao !!!

Latest and greatest equals $$$$$. Keeping that in mind, here are the best Crossfire and SLI boards right now:

Crossfire: DFI LanParty UT RDX200
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813136165

Nvidia SLI: ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131568

Both are AMD boards, Intel processors are still inferior to AMD. I am personally waiting for the second generation Crossfire boards that will incorporate the new AM2 socket and DDR2. However, you probably won't see many of those till this summer or fall.

Sorry for the newbie questions but I noticed all the boards were 939. I thought I heard that AMD was dropping the 939 in favor of the 940. If this is so, any guess on when the 940 x2 cards wil be coming out?

The 940 socket you are referring to is the AM2 socket (aka M2). AMD already makes a 940-pin processor, so to differentiate between that and the new one, most people call it the AM2. The AM2 socket should be out sometime around the end of March, and the new X2 processors (basically repackaged socket-939 X2s) should be available about the same time.
