Yeah, I know this ought to be simple, but it's driving me nuts.
My main home computer is hard-wired to a router, along with 1 other computer. I use a Microsoft LAN card. Simple. No prob.
I had some connectivity problems with another setup recently, and after struggling for some time I noted that in "Network Connections" (i.e. in Control Panel), there was not only an icon for my Local Area Connection, but also an icon for an Internet Connection (the latter using the generic 'My Computer' icon). I recognized this as an Internet Connection Sharing setup (right?), as under Properties for the latter icon it was identified as a "gateway" that "allows you to connect to the Internet through a shared connection on another computer." Those computers (they were work boxes) were so screwed up I eventually wiped them and reinstalled, and I had a networking guru neighbor of mine come over and show me how to set up networking without the dumbass "wizard."
Anyway, it's now months later and my personal-use machine started having connectivity problems out of the blue. I happened to look under "Network Connections," and there's that bloomin' icon for Internet Connection again. I can't imagine what I could've done (never used the network setup wizard), but it can't be simply deleted. It only opens sometimes (I ticked off the box to make it show up in the systray when it's "on" so I can see when it's active), but it always causes problems.
Someone clue me in here. I almost suspect a virus of some sort. I have not tampered with my networking settings in any way. Both of these current computers (as I mentioned in the setup at the top of this post) have the TCP/IP configured to use static IPs (so that I can configure port forwarding in the router).
Oh, and here's a pic of what I'm talking about.
PLeeeeaaasse help me get rid of that "gateway" icon.
Ain't to proud to beg,
