Please help me setup new android phone

I have 3 android phones I use, a Samsung Galaxy S9 (activated) and 2 Tracfones (unactivated). The S9 is CDMA on Verizon and my plan is via MVNA Red Pocket, a modest yearly plan for $99 providing 1000 minutes talk, unlimited text and 1GB data. Been on that plan around 3 years and never exceeded limits, so figure to continue it.

Just bought a new Google Pixel 8 unlocked 256GB (open box, and it looks brand new), received today. Online info suggested that this Pixel 8 is GSM, but supports CDMA internationally (I guess if I travel). I called my MVNO, Red Pocket before I received the phone and they said they didn't know if I could still use Verizon CDMA, might have to use AT&T or T-Mobile GSM network. To find out I had to provide them with the IMEI number. So, I receive the phone today and the IMEI is on the box. Actually, it's a dual SIM phone. I provide the guy with the first IMEI and he puts me on hold, comes back and says the phone will work on Verizon CDMA. I tell him I'm concerned that maybe it won't work as well as on a GSM network. He says swap the SIM card (from my S9 to the Pixel 8) and turn the phone on and call them and they can confirm if it's working OK.

So, I swap the SIM card, turn on the Pixel 8 and it says it isn't charged enough ("below 25%") and won't proceed with Setup. That seems a little fishy to me. Well, there was a sticker on the box indicating it was on Open Box status dated July 24, 2024, so I guess it's been sitting on a shelf for 4 months. Maybe it discharged that much in the interim?

I let it charge an hour and try again. Now it comes up with a screen saying this:

Set up using another device

To copy settings, accounts and more from another phone or tablet, keep it nearby and unlocked. It has two large buttons to choose from

[Pixel or android device]

[iPhone or iPad]

At this point I decide to postpone the Setup process, because I don't know if I should setup this thing using my Samsung S9. Mostly it works OK, I guess, I have a lot of apps installed, 1/2 of which I never use. It has one quirk I know about. MyWorkouts app won't work in landscape. It does work in landscape if I toggle (by turning the phone on its side) on both my Tracfones, so I know the lack of that feature is something going on on the S9 (which is configured to allow landscape from portrait and vice versa).

I called Red Pocket a few minutes ago and was told just put the SIM in the Pixel 8 and it should flat out work, they have nothing to do on their end.

Should I set up the Pixel 8 using the Samsung S9 to "copy settings, accounts and more?"

Hints, explanations much appreciated! I'm more of a Windows guy (laptops), don't use my cell phones a hell of a lot, still do most of my phone stuff on my landline. Partly because my coverage here isn't great. Of course, if I travel or am away from home and need to use the phone I'll use my cell phone, but I don't do that a whole lot.

Forgot something:

Don't know for sure yet but figure the Pixel 8 has Android 14 installed. I think they had 14 from when they were introduced in February 2023. Well, Android 15 is available now and I can download/install it. Should I setup the machine and THEN upgrade to 15. Or should I upgrade to 15 at all? My Samsung S9 is running the latest Android it supports, Version 10. My Tracfones run Android 8 IIRC.

A few more details:

The reason I bought the Pixel 8 is because in a few days I will get fitted with my first hearing aids, and the Pixel 8 (even in the packaging) says it supports hearing aids. What this means (I believe) is that it supports LE Audio, and a subset of LE Audio being Auracast, which a thing going forward in audio. The Pixel 8 has Bluetooth 5.3 whereas my Samsung S9 has Bluetooth 5.0, which isn't LE Audio capable. Therefore streaming to my new hearing aids would be lackluster if not cruddy using the Samsung S9.

I just bought a couple Wifi/Bluetooth cards for my laptops that will upgrade them to Bluetooth 5.3, just received (yet to install). Figure I have to install Windows 11 on those Windows 10 machines to make them LE Audio capable (and, hopefully, fix some issues from those long-in-the-tooth Windows 10 installations). I'm going to be busy!

It's really completely up to you. You can either transfer the stuff from the S9 or just install the apps you want on the Pixel 8. Just inserting the sim should activate it on whatever network the sim uses.

If I don't like the result, can I wipe and start from scratch as if it's a new phone again? How?

Should I upgrade to Android 15 before doing setup, or is that even possible? Could I run setup after upgrading to Android 15?

Sure. Just do a factory reset through the settings to start over. Android 15 is available for the Pixel 8 and can be obtained by doing a software update through the settings menu. You can set the phone up before or after. Again, your choice. I always transfer everything from the old phone during setup and then do the software updates, but that's just through habit. It would end up the same if I did it in reverse order.

Thanks. I've never done something like this. I'm wondering, I have a lot of apps installed on the Android 10 Samsung S9. Will some of them not work on Android 14 or 15? If not, will they be transferred anyway?

My problem app is MyWorkouts which refuses to go landscape (as I described above). I figured (after searching the internet for answers) that it's because some app is interfering with going to landscape even though I have it enabled in settings. Videos do go to landscape, but that may not be relevant. I am not getting landscape when reading text, e.g. Kindle app, which is annoying.

I figured that if I add apps one by one I can maybe identify what app is causing the problem. This is a bit speculative. Maybe Android 15 won't have this issue for me with this app. My Tracfones on Android 8 don't have this problem.

It is possible that an app may not run on Android 15 that ran on an earlier version of Android. I don't think the store will install them if this is the case.

I'd install the problem app first, see if it runs the way you want it to and then install each app in turn, checking to see if it still works.

OK, so don't have Setup restore from the Samsung S9, or I figure maybe Setup will let me restore but hold off on app restoration so I can do as you say, one by one. I haven't looked into it much, but I get the impression I have some control on how restore does things.

Yes, you should be able to pick the things you want to restore.

Thanks. I'm thinking maybe first try restoring whatever will restore and see if I get OK behavior, in particular landscape on those apps. If not, then do it a 2nd time and add apps one by one like you say. I suppose that would necessitate a factory reset. Seems like a decent strategy because doing one by one takes a long time and maybe I won't need to.

I don't know how a rogue app could prevent the screen from rotating.

I'm thinking of iPhoneOS, but Pixel's Android should be the same IMO.
Apps aren't actually copied from old device to new. They are downloaded anew from the app store, while the sandboxed data has been copied over.*

Android was never great at preserving some stuff, but it recently got a little better. TBH I've never owned a Pixel so I don't know what their switcher UI looks like.

* I don't actually know how sideloaded apps are handled.

I haven't yet set up the Pixel 8. I'm wondering if it matters which phone the SIM is in. Also wonder how the phones communicate if the option to gather info from the previous Android phone is selected. Is it by WIFI or Bluetooth?

The one with the sim will be the one that works on the cell network. Whichever one it's in. You should get a choice of ways to connect - wifi or cable for sure. Possibly bluetooth.

So, put the SIM in the Pixel? Reset if I need it is gonna be in the Pixel Settings, right?

I set up the Pixel this morning, first thing. It was easier/faster than I figured. I said Yes to almost everything, maybe not a good idea. I did read most of the info about what was going on except the long agreements, of course.

Figure to lookup recommended settings whys & wherefores and make some adjustments.

Good news is Portrait <---> Landscape IS working. Said all 107 apps were transferred, I don't know that they'll all work but so far they do, but have only tried a few.

Gonna look into updating. Don't even know if I'm running 14 or 15 right now.

I would guess you are on 14? Just go to the about phone
This morning I went to System and Updates and it suggested update to 15 and IIRC 68 or so updates to the apps. Did a search and AI suggested get 15 first, so I did that, then the app updates.

I'm having a problem in that all audio played in the phone (e.g. music, videos) play on the speakers, not my Bluetooth paired hearing aids. Bluetooth is enabled.

Must be a BT LE setting.

Enable developer options. This is pretty simple, https://developer.android.com/studio/debug/dev-options

There is a setting in developer options called Bypass Bluetooth LE Audio Allowlist - I am thinking this may help you, but not sure. Either way, it's not going to negatively affect you if it doesn't work. If it doesn't, just disable it in developer options. Are your hearing aids upgraded to the latest firmware?

Yeah, I asked the fitter (head of the Costco Hearing Aid Center) if they have the latest firmware and he said yes, they came from the factory with it. Said if a newer FW was available it would so indicate in the Rexton app and that they would have to do it and they could in 5 minutes.

I'll look into that tweak in dev options. Thanks.

Cool. Enable that option and see what happens. If that doesn't work will require some searching about your specific hearing aids and android/Pixel 8

Looking up things earlier today, I see that LE Audio isn't necessary to stream audio to the aids, just BT LE (mFi and ASHA). But these aids and the phone are LE Audio supporting.
