Please Help Me Set Up a Belkin USB 2.0 Hub

Dari

Lifer
I have Windows XP with SP1
I have a Belkin f5u234 USB 2.0 Hub

When I connect the hub to the Dell Inspiron laptop, it tells me that the device is un-recognized and it installs an "Unknown Device" on the computer. Belkin doesn't provide drivers and tell me that XP with SP1 will find the Hub automatically, which it doesn't. What can I do?

Does you Lappy even have USB Highspeed ports to plug the Hub into? If not then you're outta luck unless you can go via PCMCIA, and if it does is it enabled in the BIOS?

I would think that even if he doesn't have USB 2.0 on his laptop, the hub should still work and be detected but run at USB 1.1 speeds, these hubs are backwards compatable.
I'd check out Dells support site.

Check if there are any other updates for Windows. I think there was one relased under the "Windows Update" thing in your start menu that resolved some USB errors. Try that.

Could also try manually updating driver....in device manger right click on "unknown device" properties, then update drivers....see if that does anything.
Do you have another system to try hub on, just to make sure hub is not bad?

I don't have another computer and it comes with its own AC power.

THe strange thing is the Hub worked fine when I first connected it. Then, like everyone else with a laptop, when I took my laptop somewhere else to use, returned it and plugged everything, it wouldn't work. I only took the thing downstairs so I could use it while watching TV.

Furthermore, when I was checking out the device manager (while the hub was unplugged) I saw a "Generic USB Hub" under the USB controller. But when I plugged the Hub back in, it dissappeared. I think it has to do with the drivers. I wish Belkin had provided me with (at least the Microsoft) drivers.
