I recently got married and would like to modify some of our wedding pictures with either Paintshop Pro, Photoshop, or another program. I would also like to get into making new "skins" for various flight simulator that I fly such as Flanker2, WWII Fighters, and the upcoming IL-2. I assume either one of the aforementioned packages will suffice for this job but the question is: which program would work best for this application; which program of this type give the most bang for the buck and how much should I expect to spend? Thanks in advance for your opinion.

I prefer Adobe Photoshop. I use it for web-design, photo editing, and everything else. With the differnt plugins you can make it do almost anything..

Paintshop Pro should bring you quite far. I'm using it for a lot of designing (graphics for sites) and it never lets me down.

<edit>It is also a lot cheaper than PS ;) </edit>

At first I liked Paintshop Pro better, but as I started working with Photoshop, it is alot better then I thought it was..

If you are buying it *cough... Photoshop will not let you down.... But it is pricey and you might want to buy one of the many how-to books out there...

If you are pretty new to graphics then you may want to stick with paintshop pro (there is a cool free trial at thier website Jasc Website). If you think you may really get into this stuff then you may want to get your hands on something like Photoshop LE and play around a bit. Then if you like it you can goto Photoshop 6 or something...but dont waste your money on tools that you wont use...and full fleged Photoshop is VERY powerful and you wont use all of its capabilities ;)

Caveman,

If you don't mind a relatively steep learning curve and you think that photoediting is something you might "get into", you might as well go for Photoshop 6. It requires some serious horsepower, but if you're a serious flightsim guy that shouldn't be a problem. If you are a student or educator OR if you know one, the academic price is not too terrible. Another option is Ulead's PhotoImpact. Oh, and congrats on the wedding :D .

dcpsoguy,

I have found the following to be rather helpful:

PS Tutorials by Mark
Some decent tutorial links
And don't forget the adobe site itself Adobe , there are some good tips pages there.

I haven't been by lately to see whether any of them have many PS 6-specific tutorials, but most should work fine in 6.

I've been "moving up" to PS 6 the last month myself, excellent usability improvements. One of my students likes the new Deke McClelland book "Look and Learn Photoshop 6", it's a bit simplistic, but when you just can't remember how to do something, it is a great book to grab. Only $20.

My $0.02 and Happy New Year!
